Rafas ability at nurturing and progressing youth

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

TERRIBLE

maybe he can take credit for alonso but honestly what other young players has helped progress?

insua - has potential, is playing ok but i wouldnt exactly say rafa has worked wonders

babel - if at arsenal by now hed one of the best forwards in the world, under rafa he know has zero confidence and  has had all his ability zapped from him

Agger - a young lad when signed, potentially one of the worlds best centre backs but once again has had his confidence raped from him

lucas - brazilian player of the year now turned into a water carrier who can barely pass further than 5 yards

No homegrown breakthrough in the past 6 years.......

no chance for homegrown to breakthrough in the past years

Houllier and even roy evans progressed youth far better than rafa has, sad but true.

Insua is a 1st team player now, he needs games. Do you expect anyone coming through the ressies to claim a starting spot so easily? Those sorts of players don't come around that often.

Also before you start jizzing off remember it took Fergus 5 years to bring a player through their academy who would later go onto hold a regularplace in in the 1st team - Ryann Giggs. How many years has Rafa been here? 5 is it? Enough said.

Stevie would have come through anyway regardless of who was in charge so you can't credit Houllier with that.

comon man you cant defend rafa on this one

he brings highly rated talent here and turns into nervous, lacking in confidence wrecks

So the fact that he has done as well so far as one of the most successful mangers ever means nothing?

To be a top level full back you need a modicum of pace which Insua patently lacks. I like the lad and he has done some good things but as long as he plays we are open to opponents down our left hand side. I've never heard before of bringing on players to 'cover' your left back which is what Aurellio has been doing recently. For me one of the biggest failings this year has been our defence and  part of that problem is your man Insua.

insua - He is still only 20 and is in the first team for us and making his way into the Argentina squad... I would say he has worked wonders

babel - How do you know that Arsene Wenger could turn him into a star??? you a fortune teller? His ability has not been zapped from him.. it is still there he is just lacks the intellegence to use it.

Agger - Confidence Raped from him? ??? How is that Rafa's fault, he is giving him lots of game time. The only thing that may be hindering his confidence is injury.

lucas - May I remind you that the man united player Anderson, was once brazilian player of the year. The man who made Christiano Ronaldo has failed to turn this guy into a player.  And i recall Arsene Wenger singing a young brazilian player of the year a few years ago who came and went... Oh and have you heard of Keirrison ? Top scorer for two seasons in the Brazilian League... Barcelona have bought him and loaned him out to Benfica where he has only scored one goal in a pre season friendly and hasnt even made the first team.

What a load of sh!te you are talking, If the talent is there it will always break through especially in the current climate I think Rafa would more than welcome it.

It's like saying Rafa should of stuck with Neil Mellor just to prove your point and I think he give him a good chance too.

It's simple if the talent is there it will always prosper

insua , darby , kelly , spearing , ngog , pacheco , ayala , ecclestone all young ressie players who have played first team footy this year and a number of them look like they can do well plus a few more waiting in the wings with bright futures , something that seems to have changed ever since rafa was able to bring in his own people and oversea the kids .

I don't agree with the thread starters post.

However Insua should never be holding down a regular place in the first team. Poor defender!

It's easy to get stuck into the thread starter coz a couple of statements are a bit stupid (particularly the Babel one) but it's hard to disagree with the sentiment. The youth set-up has thrown up nothing of any note since Gerrard came through. You can point to Insua (a player I quite like) but there's no getting away from the fact that he is playing in the worst LFC defence (statistically) of the last 10 years. I know the likes of Spearing and Pachecho have had a run out this season but then so did players like Hobbs, Palletta and Mellor but none of them (and countless others) amounted to anything.

I was actually talking about this yesterday
How long has the academy been going and how many British players have gone on to make the grade professionally?

I disagree with the TS. The way you see this is because you're comparing average youth players to high-class youth players. A bit of an example would be Ngog. He's a 20 year old striker, same age and position as Alexander Pato, yet he's nowhere near. But that's fine, because Ngog's quality is enough for now.

And if you take a look at our youth team, I see some real talents in them. Kelly, Pacheco, Al-Zhar, Nemeth, Plessis, Spearing and Darby have all had impressive starts in the team and have potential. In fact, I can't wait till Nemeth comes back and plays for the team.
