The Champions League – could it help us to the title?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

The CL kicks off next week and all of the teams above us will be involved. The question is, will it help us enough to take the top spot?

Personally, I think Arsenal is spent and the added pressure of CL footie will see then drop more and more points. But what about Chelsea and Man City? I think they will go far in the competition and that will put the strain on their league form. Who knows, maybe even enough to give us enough points to win the damn thing.

What do you think?

Brendan made a good point the other day, he said people keep saying not being in the CL is an advantage but how many non CL teams have won the title in the last two decades?

The league has been wide open this season. As we've seen, any team can get points against anybody. The fulham draw against united was great, but it wasn't that much of a shock. If they would have beaten us today or drawn us, it may be a bit more of a shock, but still not that surprising. Chelsea drawing WBA, and same with us, really not a shock. So in general, it's really hard to say anything at this point is certain. If you look at the remaining fixtures, City and Arsenal play almost all of the top clubs away from home, while Chelsea and ourselves play almost everybody home, so there's  clear advantage for us there. Right now everybody is struggling away from home, so it's hard to even guess how much of an advantage that may be.

The CL will definitely put a strain on the other clubs. United will probably go all out in every CL game as it's really their last hope towards qualifying next year. Chelsea and city have a chance to actually win the thing, and ar5ne1 will pretend like they've got a chance at it. If they throw themselves at those tough away fixtures, I really think fatigue can cost them a bit in the PL. Especially as they get further towards the final, their minds will be firmly focused on the CL over the PL. Either way they'll drop points. What's most important is that we figure our ***** out right now and stop making so many defensive mistakes so that we aren't dropping points.

Its a very good point though while other teams being in CL probably doesnt help us. I think the fact  with our squad at moment  we dont have any Europeans committments is an advantage in a successful campaign aka CL footy next year and a title challenge

I reckon with Arsenal it will depend on the weekend. Arsenal and Wenger will want to win something this year and if was to knock them out of the Fa cup they might think that the CL is there best chance despite having the best team in the world in the next round.

Citeh and Chelseas squads are too big and wont cause a distraction.

I think it will determine who wins the title as the one team that copes best with that will probably win it.

As much as I would love us to do it, I just don't think we are capable this year. Whilst we continue to struggle away from home as we do then I think we will fall short.  Our defence is injured and the ones currently playing there look vulnerable, and when we need to change a game late on, we have little or nothing on the bench.

Our challenge this season will be holding Spurs off for 4th, and I'd be delighted if we do that.

It's not impossible for us to win the league this season, but at the same time I don't think it will happen. Considering where we were just over a year ago that's not a bad reflection on how we have moved on in that time and we should be pleased with the progress we have made. The key thing for us is to secure a top 4 position and if we get that build on the squad we have come the summer transfer window.

It's obviously less of a burden on the team to not have to contend with getting top 4 and push for a CL title, but when you look at the financial rewards of a good run in the CL plus how it impacts players decisions to stay or leave clubs it's a no brainer. Players like Suarez want CL football and we were lucky to hold onto him this season.

I don't think i'll be dreaming about the title at all until we have at least top 4 in the bag.  Spurs are still far too close for me to be enjoying it all  :D

If we can put 6 points and GD between ourselves and the team in 5th well then I might start looking up the table.
