Guttenburg (I think) - the guy that discovered how to print. Without him there'd be no newspapers or books that educated the world to take the next step.

Of course, you could argue that somebody else would have but sometimes an invention is hundreds of years ahead of what anybody else is thinking (I've no idea whether other people were working on the same idea at the time).
