I'm not a car thief, says Liverpool's Dutch star

Jul 11 2005

By Graham Davies, Daily Post Staff

A MIX-UP over documents led to Liverpool FC's newest player being arrested on suspicion of stealing a car.

Police arrested Holland international Bolo Zenden, who arrived at Anfield on Monday, because the Dutch plates of his imported car appeared suspicious.

Officers stopped the 28-year-old midfielder, who has signed a £35,000-a-week deal with Liverpool, while he was driving his Porsche around the city centre on Tuesday night.

After inspecting his documentation, police read Zenden his rights.

And, despite the former Middlesbrough player's pleas that he had done nothing wrong, police took him down to the station where he was later released on bail.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "All we can confirm is that a 28-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening in the Liverpool city centre area, on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

"He was bailed pending further inquiries."

Zenden, whose versatility on the field means he can fill defensive or midfield positions, spent the last two seasons at Middlesbrough after joining Chelsea in 2001.

Boro manager Steve McClaren was desperate to hold on to the player, but Zenden was lured to Liverpool on a free transfer last week.

At his signing on Monday, Zenden told reporters he intended to spend his time at Anfield playing midfield.

He said: "There are a lot of quality midfield players at Liverpool but I have not just come here to fill in the gaps.

"I have played in the middle with Boro last year and my main strengths are getting into the box and being creative, so I am looking to do a similar job here."

Zenden was considered the natural successor to Marc Overmars when he began his career with PSV Eindhoven in the 1994-95 season.

He was named Dutch Player of the Year in 1998 before moving to Barcelona, where he helped the team win the Spanish title.

He originally signed for Chelsea for £7.5m on a four-year deal in

2001. Zenden made 36 appearances for the team in his first Premiership season, but suffered an injury in January 2002 which kept him out of action until April.

The player joined Boro on a year's loan in August, 2003 and scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the Carling Cup final at Cardiff.

He signed a permanent one-year deal with the team on a free transfer in July 2004 after playing for Holland in the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal.

Liverpool FC last night refused to make a comment about the arrest, saying the incident was a private matter.

arrests usually are a private matter, otherwise we all would be in his cell right now :D
