Portsmouth are set to sign former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld, report BBC Radio Solent.

The Dutchman, 30, will undergo a medical on Friday before completing a switch from Mallorca to Fratton Park.

Pompey are also close to completing a loan deal for Benfica's 23-year-old Norwegian striker Azar Karadas.

"At the start of our transfer campaign I told you we would be improving every position - including goalkeeper," said Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric.

"Westerweld is an experienced goalkeeper and he spent a couple of years at Liverpool and in Spain.

"Alain Perrin (manager) is looking to give young Jamie Ashdown a bit of competition."

Not a bad keeper Westerveld, but has his dodgy moments.

Could be a good signing for portsmouth, but you have to wonder why clubs keep getting rid of him (unusual for a keeper to have had so many transfers).

You've got to admit every keeper has their dodgy moments. He made 1 mistake for us when we played bolton a couple of seasons ago and houllier got rid of him. It was such a shame because he had a great treble season with us aswell.

It's a good signing for pompey and a majour coup for perrain.

he was a great kicker of the ball and a decent shot stopper but tended to flap at crosses. he was a bit unlucky to be sold by houllier who made the keeper a scapegoat when it was our lack of creativity and style of play that really cost us.

Hislop is about 35 now mate, I think they released him.

Westerveld was a great goalie for LFC and he only made one really boo boo and that was against Bolton, the reason why GH sold him is he felt Sander opened his mouth too much on his private website :(

Yep, every keeper does have their dodgy moments.

But 1 mistake?  Come on.  Do you not remember his gaff against everton in the last minute, where at 1-1 in the last minute an everton player had a kick at him.  A free kick was awarded and westerveld took the huff with the opposing player, deliberately kicked the free kick at the player, only to see it rebound off him and trickle towards our empty goal!!  To avoid having to either award a goal or give a free for encroachment, the ref blew for full time just before the ball crossed the line.  All westerveld's fault, he was lucky.

For me, that showed what a loose cannon westerveld was, there were a few other times when he lost the rag too.

Westerveld was similar to Dudek in that he had a good first season, but seemed to deteriorate.  His kicking was immense though if I remember, could almost kick to the opposition box.

people have short memories.....towards the end of his time here, he flapped at crosses more times than James did!  Good keeper, but the fact he keeps moving on after a couple of seasons shows that he just isn't good enough.
