Yeah I don't really buy into this stuff about it being Rafa's fault either. As I've said a couple of times, the Keane substitution didn't come off, but that was more because Babel was awful than for any other reason. Cameo's like the Dutchman's on Saturday are the kind of things that "shipped out to West Ham in January" are made of.
Also, I think we kind of made rods for our own backs and this principly happened in the first half. Having taken the lead so early, we then proceeded to utterly dominate the rest of the first half without making a chance. Most worryingly, it didn't seem to be as a result of particularly a lack of creativity, as much as it was as a result of being content to sit on the lead. During that period, Spurs were absolutely shambolic and although we looked good passing it around in triangles, nobody it seemed to me had the urgency to say "lets put this game to be here and now". I didn't see Gerrard urging the troops forward, I didn't see either Alonso or Masherano showing any great desire to get involved in the play further forward, I didn't see a meanigful contribution from Riera, and I didn't see a determination from Keane to score the second goal.
It was like we are 1-0 up and well on top, so we'll just see what happens from here. Now I've no doubt that the manager put a few rockets up people's erses at half time and in fairness we then had three or four good chances to win it. We didn't of course and in the end got robbed (am I still the only one though who thinks that Pepe should definately have saved the first goal?), but I can't help harking back to that first half. The Mancs and Chelsea miss plenty of chances too of course, but when they've got their foot on your throat like we did to Spurs in the first half, they don't paint pictures they make chances. That for me is the main lesson of the game, 1-0 up after three minutes is lovely, 3-0 after half an hour and you can rest/rotate in the second half till the cows come home.
