I notice Pompey have signed Finnan on a one year deal.

I just wonder whether with Arbeloa seeming more than likely to leave and Degen permanently injured, Benitez might have considered bringing Finnan back on a short term deal as cover.

He's 33 and has had a few injuries, but is safe as houses and knows the club inside out.  Johnson will be first choice RB, but if he's unavailable we're looking at Carragher, Skrtel or Degen as cover.  I don't like either of the CBs being shifted there and Degen's fitness is suspect.

We do have Darby and Kelly, but there have been rumours circulating that one or both could be loaned out this season.

It's the photo of the Marca website with the headline "He comes back home". Apparently it was done yesterday, and right now the deal is official. He's gone.

I think that like Luis Garcia, Arbeloa will regret this move to Spain sooner rather than later.

I happen to agree with you there...His prospects vis a vis the Spainish NT, is a lot better in Liverpool than as a role player in Madrid..

well its also not great for us to lose a dependable versatile squad member but i suppose our hands were tied with this one.

Still a shame though.

He is going to Madrid and with the signing of Johnson who can blame him for going? He is a good player but we have signed an even better one in his position. So he is pictured with a Madrid top the day before he signs, so what, we all know he is gone and its not as if its a big surprise. Its hardly Ince in a United top while he was still as West Ham is it?

Good look to the guy, he has moved on so should we - end of

Totally agree for the money we are selling for we wouldn't be able to replace him with a player as good with the money off him.He is your ideal squad man who is versatile and they are valuable in terms of the squad

So what you you want him to do?  Sit on the bench and hope for a chance?

Its world cup year and he knows it, he is not going to get into the Spain squad warming the bench

Anyone know how much we got for him?

Thing is he will be bench warming in Madrid too.

How do you know he will play more for Real though ?

and tbh i dont care what he wants so much, being selfish i wanted our versatile player to stay.
Even if it meant we got f'ck all next year.

What can you do?

Ideally I'd have kept him as I rate him as a very solid defender.

But he's now going to be second choice and he knows it.  He's coming into the last year of his contract and it's a world cup year.  The biggest team in Spain (who he has previously played with and clearly he has a soft spot for) come in for him.  What would you do in his position?

I think we bought him for about £2.5 million so are making a couple of million profit for a player with an expiring contract.

Not a bad deal for all concerned under the circumstances.
