Liverpool confirm Voronin signing

Liverpool have announced Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin will join the club in the summer on a four-year deal.
The 27-year-old, who is a free agent at the end of the season, will move from Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer.

Voronin has also had spells with Cologne, Mainz and Borussia Moenchengladbach and has 40 caps for Ukraine, scoring five goals.

He was part of the Leverkusen side that knocked Blackburn out of the Uefa Cup earlier this week.

Voronin was also in the Ukraine side that reached the World Cup finals in Germany last year.

And he twice played against Liverpool two years ago when Rafa Benitez's side beat Leverkusen 6-2 on aggregate en route to winning the Champions League.

Voronin's transfer is the first under the new regime of American tycoons George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who agreed a takeover of Liverpool earlier this month.

Lads I'm normally very opened minded concerning buys but this one is a mystery at best. I hope Rafa's not gone doo-lar-lee and bought his version of David Speedie....

Anyway, this lad or Ruud Van Horseface? Need I even ask...?  ???

I havent seen hardly anything of him so its really difficult to give an opinion.
I did see part of the Blackburn game and he didnt stand out or have any part of his game that showed the something different he could offer compared with our current strikers.

But to be fair to the lad, he played upfront on his own and Leverkusen sat back defending what they had so it was always going to be a difficult night for him.

just listening to a top german journalist now on how voronin will fair in this country. essentially he's a fox in the box type of player. not spectacular by any means but a player who will score goals, particularly in games where the opposition sits deep at anfield.

he essentially isn't scoring freely for leverkusen because they aren't playing to his strengths and isn't getting into the correct positions. i saw him against blackburn last week but couldn't really form an opinion on him because leverkusen were so negative and hardly mounted an attack in the whole game.

players such as berbatov and rosicky haven't done too bad since moving to this country from german football so i'm prepared to give voronin a chance. i'm just concerned about the previous record of ukranian strikers who come over here.

havent seen much of him myself st mike but from what ive seen and heard hes not so much a finisher than a hard worker who will get his fair share of assists. his goal scoring record is more fox in socks than box

i don't know if i should laugh or cry,
or maybey the boss is banking on him out-performing his £30M international team mate at chelski, so much that his value rises considerably, then we can sell him for a healthy profit,
maybey not.

cannot recall seeing him play, but if Rafa thinks he can do the job, then why not give him a shot? Besides he comes for free, so no financial risk there (other than his wages). Can't see him being more than a replacement for Robbie though, i.e. 4th choice at best.

I have no intention on being Voronin's advocate, but I would like you to see this comparison ...

Voronin ... 176 / 62

2006 - 2007  21 / 6  Bayer Leverkusen
2005 - 2006  29 / 7  Bayer Leverkusen
2004 - 2005  32 / 15  Bayer Leverkusen
2003 - 2004  19 / 5  1. FC Köln
2002 - 2003  31 / 20  FSV Mainz 05
2001 - 2002  34 / 8  FSV Mainz 05
2000 - 2001  10 / 1  FSV Mainz 05

Bellamy ... 188 / 61

2006 - 2007  21 / 7  Liverpool
2005 - 2006  27 / 13  Blackburn Rovers
2004 - 2005  33 / 14  Newcastle United / Celtic
2003 - 2004  16 / 4  Newcastle United
2002 - 2003  29 / 8  Newcastle United
2001 - 2002  27 / 9  Newcastle United
2000 - 2001  34 / 6 Coventry City

I am not saying that the Bundesliga and the Premiership are on the same level, but we should give him a chance. In many ways I see this as a similar move to when Rafa signed Mista at Valencia. Nobody could really understand it. Everyone was like "who the hell is this guy?". I'm not saying that Voronin will be as prolific as Mista was but I still think he could do a decent job, more as Kuyt's understudy than anything else.

Above all else he's got to get a hair cut, mine looked like that back in the mid 90's when long hair was IN again. But he looks b.loody awful with that frollop on his head.  :D
