Oh and, I see this transfer fee going the following way.........

Figo still has a year left with Real. He really wants to go to Liverpool.

Only a few teams could afford his wages, but Real is already bound to pay him if he doesn't transfer.

That is 4 mill in wages for just sitting on the bench. That is 4 million lost for a player that they won't even use.

Now they can offload him to us and won't have to pay a dime because they have unloaded the excess baggage.

If not, they can unsuccessfully try to sell him and just eat 4 million. Even Fiorentino' deep pockets and low IQ won't allow him to do that and Figo will be wearing a red shirt in a bit.

yeah, he was no peter thompson or cally but the last few games he came off the bench i felt he was quietly effective in his own way. but you`re right mate, if we are going to compete at the very top level we need players of the calibre of gerrard, alonso and morientes, if we get a decent offer i think we should thank him for his efforts and let him go.

Figo might or might not still be good enough to do a job for us - worth a punt on a free transfer even if his wages are high - but I bitterly resent paying ANY fee to Real. People on here have complained about them dicking us before, but this one takes the biscuit after they've already said he can leave on a free. Call their bluff I say - no-one else has put any offers in have they?

Idont get this about figo, ok hes getting on, but surely we cant be questioning his ability, the only thing in question here is his heart, whether he has come here to play football or just get a retirement package. Figo can pass, shoot, cross, beat players, hes been everywere u can think of football wise and would be a great player to have for the kids to look up to....Hes on a free so i dont think its a gamble and at Liverpool im sure there are a few players who wont accept it if Figo is just here for the ride.

you misunderstand me mate - I was saying he IS worth having. My point is only about paying Real 2 mil for a player they said could leave on a free

neil i reckon this is the madrid president getting his own back because any time the two clubs have discussed something they have wanted to drag a first option on gerrard clause into the dealings and liverpool have had none of it. and your right they shafted us good style on the owen deal and played morientes for about two minutes in the champions league to cup tie him just before they sold him to us. not soft are they?

makes sense, but we shouldn't be falling for it, should we?

One thing I will say about Figo in his favour is...........He scored one of the classiest goals in the Champions league i have ever seen!

Do any of you remember the goal he scored V Man Utd at the Bernebau when they won 3-1. I think Raul scored the other two. He floated a curler into the top corner! total class!  I remember the commentator on ITV saying.........Devastating world class!

I suppose he can offer the class factor. But this deal might not materialise.

Figo was a bit of a free kick specialist at Barca but obviously did'nt get a look in at RM with Carlos, Zadane & Beckham around, however he could certainly uterlise that skill with us.

Found this report on Talklfc.com , thought it might  add to the debate

According to reports, Liverpool officials will soon be meeting their Real
Madrid counterparts over the move of Portuguese superstar Luis Figo. The player has agreed personal terms with the club but it is believed that the Reds are not willing to splash the cash for the Galactico.

"An accord exists between Liverpool and Luis over the financing of the move," said Figo's agent Luis Douens.

"Luis wants to play in England and Liverpool is a great club. "The decision rests on Real."

"If they want money for the transfer then I believe it will be hard."

Real Madrid are said to be going back on their word as they had a verbal agreement with Figo that he could leave on a free transfer if he could find himself a suitable new club. Real sporting director Arrigoi Sacchi has suggested the final decision will lie with Florentino Perez.

"The subject of Figo is a question for Florentino," said Sacchi.

"The final decision will be with the president."

It was reported in Spanish daily Marca that Liverpool's £2million bid for the 32-year-old star had been accepted by the Madrid giants but this claim was refuted by the Liverpool Echo.

Meanwhile, rumours are rife in the city that Rafa Benitez have held talks with former Reds star Michael Owen for a return to Anfield.
