And in those few seasons we might not of done well we could of missed out on cl football .

You cant sell 6 players to raise funds then only buy two players .

Did you even read that article?

Fergie is able to splash 20Mil on 1 player where as Rafa has to spend it on a few different positions.

Good find BadBob. About time someone set everyone straight. I think some people were actually starting to believe we had spent as much as Utd overall but this was never going to be the case in reality.

The reality of it all is that we are competing against big spenders on small budget and doing ok.

Just to be clear, mate, my aim wasn't to set anyone straight nor am I necessarily endorsing Tomkins's analysis.  Rather, I wanted to open things up for a discussion on our spending and what it means.  I've seen a lot of numbers mentioned in a lot of threads in recent months and, if people are willing, I'd like to see them brought in here and held up to scrutiny.  If nothing else, maybe we can sort out a figure for our spending that just about everyone can agree on.  From there, I think the discussion moves to the more philosophical question of what it all means in terms of our league position and sense of progress.

The thing is when people talk about Rafa spending 30Mil a season or whatever they are saying ok we spend as much as Utd but us and Utd are in 2 different positions. Fergie did not have to rebuild his squad in 2004 he can just throw 20Mil at 1 player. Rafa doesnt that kind of cash avaiable per position.

We might have missed CL maybe and 6 players to buy 2 no it was more like 3 players to buy 2 really since rafa was getting 25 mil easy each season before having to sell players and alot of players we sold we got 5 mil each for.

The risk of missing CL is too great to take - you cannot miss out on CL no matter what - it is essential for the club .

No Its a must for rafa the club would have done well not being in it for 1 season.

A. T&T might have had to sell up faster
B. we could have focused on league purely 1 season
C. 1 season with less games can do wonders for a players motivation.

No mate we have to be competing at that level no matter what.

Even if we did drop out for a year there is no guarantee the owners would sell. We could just be forced to sacrifice a player to meet interest payments. I think they have sold top players before at their whatever clubs they are part of in the US.

You have to admire Tomkins, he has finally come up with a way to TOTALLY ignore any bad buys that the manager makes (How Houllier would have loved him :D ) any players that have been sent out on loan (Pennant suddenly becomes a freebie) AND changes a £200million spend into £127million.

Maybe we should be asking how, if the manager has spent circa £200million WHY the squad is only WORTH £127million ?

Sorry but no -

No team cant afford to not be in the CLs -

1. it helps attract the big players - the top ones
2. The money you get from the tournament enables you to pay for the big players
3. Being in the tournament enables you to keep your best players.
4. Not being in the CL good for motivation ? you really think our players would of been motivated by playing less games while other teams and players play on the big stage every week ? They all want to play in the CL and if they didnt get it with us they would look elsewhere .

Think saint your looking at it in exactly the way Tomkins is saying - just looking at the figures without going a bit deeper into it . Chelsea spent nearly 600 mil yet why it there squad only worth 200 mil ? Man Utd 400 mil yet squad only worth 190 mil ish ? . No sqaud will be worth what teams spend . it just cant happen as that would mena you would need every single player there that you bought over a period .

Villa doing well ? yes they are in the top 4 at the moment but how many world class players have they managed to attract - and i mean world class - players like torres and gerrard .

Liverpool not in the CL is a disaster we cannot afford ever.

As well as the fact not being in the CL means you loose out on approx 30 odd mil so you wont be able to afford the top players .
