Actually, Chile is in South America isn't it, so he might be our joint first South American.  Does anyone know of any others I've forgotten?

heres what bbc sport had to say:

Liverpool agree deal for Paletta

Paletta starred for Argentina in last year's Under-20 World Cup
Argentine defender Gabriel Paletta has agreed a four-year deal to join Liverpool at the end of the season.
The player's current club Atletico Banfield had claimed on Monday that talks over the move had been postponed until the summer.

However, Liverpool revealed on their website that a deal has now been finalised, subject to a medical.

Paletta, who turns 20 on Wednesday, helped Argentina win the Under-20 World Cup in 2005.

He has made 33 appearances for Banfield and scored five goals.

Paletta's arrival will further boost Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez's defensive options following the recent acquisitions of Daniel Agger and Jan Kromkamp.

2 million sounds cheap for a lad like that but I will wait until I have seen him play to make up my mind.

Liverpool have struck a deal with Argentine side Banfield over Gabriel Paletta, with the defender set to move to Anfield in the summer.

The teenager, who turns 20 on Wednesday, has caught the eye with impressive displays for Banfield and the Argentine Under-20 side.

He played a key role in Argentina's march towards the Under-20 World Championship triumph in 2005 and his efforts seemingly persuaded Liverpool to step in.

Banfield played down talk of a deal being struck over the weekend, but Liverpool have now confirmed they have won the race for Paletta's signature.

Paletta has agreed a four-year contract and the deal is a major boon for Liverpool as the defender had been coveted by major players in both Europe and South America.

The defender will become a Liverpool player this summer, subject to him passing a medical at Anfield.
