Its a good sign when you aren't playing well and winning. Chelsea did that a lot last season winning 11 out of 38 games 1-0 and Everton about 10times :D

Good to see Alonso back in the team and with 2 assists tonight must top the goals created stats.

I fully expect us to beat Wigan and go 2nd, albeit for a couple of hours.

real pity we lost the fulham game the other week though, winning that 1 would've put us clear second with a game in hand over chelsea, so 6points adrift with some 24 games left. :blues:

I expect us to beat Wigan as well but it will be a difficult game. They've managed to do quite well, far than anyone expected.

Wigan have already achieved what must have their goal at the start of the season, enough points to aviod relegation. I have a sneaky suspicion that they will take their foot of the pedal now.

...but it might also mean that the players are not under so much pressure and will play better.

I dunno. but its critical we win this game, a draw wouldn't be too bad either imo.

Can't agree with that, we're playing at home so a draw would be a poor result especially since we are playing against Wigan.

Wigan, so long famous for its rugby union or league (which one I don't really know as I find rugby boring, just running with the ball). Now its football team is doing ever so well.

In recent times, they are looking more and more short of that extra bit of quality but they are defenitely good enough for the EPL. It won't be easy and we have to be prepared to win ugly again, like we did against Man City.

Heck, I'll take any win.

A.B i just reread my post, and i realised i'm probably getting splinters from having my butt firmly on the fence.

agree a win is a must, but beware the mighty wigan !

They'll be a tough side to crack and we have to watch out for their counter-attacks. Tough game indeed.

Agreed Azriahmad, Wigan have a had a good run up till now having not really played many teams who will be in the top half of the ladder come the end of the season.

Their great confidence booster against Chelsea on day 1 really set them up well and they've been able to create their own luck in front of goal and convert their chances (which statistically have been limited).

Their defense is however playing really well and we could find it hard to break down. They tend to defend as a whole team and aren't afraid of letting the opposition have most of the possession.

If we score early while Wigan are still awe struck by the Kop it should be relatively easy to keep control and nick a 2nd goal as cushion.  The longer the game goes without us scoring though, the more chance we have of losing patience and making the mistake that lets in a counter attack.

Summary: we score early - a stroll in the park; dont score early - ugly game a'la Man City.

hey A.B. "SNAP!!!"

Theo, the fact that Wigan plays as one unit in a whole match is why I think they'd be tough to crack.

We need Xabi Alonso if we want to play more beautifully, and we really missed him against Man City. We are somewhat short in the creative department, as the real Kewell or the Kewell of the past is yet to show himself at Liverpool, and Stevie have to make do with being wide on the right.

nah, I remember Chelsea did not get off to a flying start at the start of last season, grinning out many boring one-nil win but once the team settled and gel, good results ensured. Need to have more faith in Rafa, probably our best signing in the last 15 years
