Liverpool will have to fend off competition from Sevilla if they have any hope of capturing Sao Paulo defender Diego Lugano in January.
The Merseyside club has attempted to lure the Uruguayan to Anfield before the end of the transfer window, but they thwarted but they had planned to return with an improved offer in January.
But even an improved offer may not be enough with Lugano explaining that the decision not to move was not financially driven:
"I do not want to be a hypocrite," he explained.
"There were two proposals, but I talked with Juvenal and decided to stay.
"Before thinking about money, I am committed to playing for Sao Paulo in the Club World Championships and show respect to the fans."
