All the fans who's team arent in the Champions league will want a team to follow or choose to watch, Liverpool will be a desirable team to watch and therefore UEFA and Champions league sponsors will make some more money if Liverpool are playing and a large audience is watching.
But remember World Cup winners are not automatically allowed to defend their trophy, although I believe this was brought in to benefit the winners so they would be getting some competetive matches under their belt.
