Lots of twitter reports have him leaving on loan to West Ham and Skrtel leaving on loan also

Letting either of them go on loan would be stupid.

Straight sell or nothing.

Also 5m for Downing is madness. Anything over 8 or 9m would be suffice.

That is the value the club put on his contribution and prior to January this year it would have been even less. Saving £90k a week is also a key factor. Sh.it we have wasted some money over the last 5 years.

Trouble is this is the 2nd or 3rd transfer window we've tried to sell him.  No one will pay that much for him - not even close

£6m is the figure I keep reading,  so I guess it's £6m in and save on wages,  or keep someone who's never going to start in our first 11.

Unfortunately King Kenny did lost his midas touch this time around and we have washed some £50M or so down the toilet, and set us back some 5 years or so. Don't think anyone is willing to pay a high transfer fee for Downing not with his £90K/week salary, which is ridiculous tbh.

So it's £15M on Downing, £20M on Carroll, £3M on Adam and the jury is still out so far as Henderson is concern. Don't think anyone will pay more than £8M for him at the going rate so these are £40M actual loss and £10M paper loss, plus all the salaries in just a few short year...any owners will be livid, I know I would.

Let's just hope a replacement arrives or we don't have the same situation as last season with Borini getting injured and players burning out.

This whole situation is a bit of a mess really. On one hand, Downing on 90K a week is madness. He isn't good enough to be a starter for a top4 side and that wage bracket imo should only be offered to top players or ones who have been established at the club for a considerable time.

On the other hand, I still don't see a player in our squad who is more likely to start down that right flank ahead of Downing. Our options in terms of wide players are very limited as it is. We have Downing, Sterling, and Assaidi as the only natural wingers in the senior squad with Coutinho/Suarez in a free role down the opposite flank simply because we have to accommodate our best players. The lack of tactical disciple down the left flank, for me, makes the job of the right winger all the more crucial. I don't think Sterling is ready for a starting role yet and Assaidi is nowhere near good enough to start week in week out.

Many sides play 3 upfront with one of the wide players operating in a free role. Real (Ronaldo), Bayern (Robben), even Chelsea (Hazard) at times. What they all have however is a second wide player who has the work rate and stamina to get back, cover, and help down the other end when needed.

Everything considered, selling Downing for 5mill or even 10mill without making sure that a better replacement (and I mean a winger who will contribute down both ends, not another out of position forward) is brought in wouldn't be a wise move.

So we want to sell him for 6 mill, yet in the curtainraiser to the season he is in our starting XI?

Wondering where you're getting the £50m figure from. A big profit is expected of Suarez which would pull back around half of that. And Enrique and Bellamy were decent signings. Not all of Kenny's signings were bad.

6million if you seem him today and particularly the number of times he gave the ball away when he cut inside, you'd have a neck to look for 3 mill
