It's another cost cutting exercise IMO

If it means we are able to allocate his reported 80k a week to more important existing and new players then I'm all for it. If everything was about cost cutting we wouldn't have renewed the contracts of our best players like Gerrard, Suarez, Agger, Johnson, etc.

I don't see a point in getting rid of Downing unless it's for getting more money in order to sign some of our targets (Costa, Eriksen, Papadopoulos etc.). Downing is no more than a mid-table player but unfortunately that's where we are now. He's good enough for a squad filler at least. 5mill is way too low as well.

I can think of 90000 reasons every fkg week.............and if it is about cost cutting who could blame them. I'd rather give the money to charity. Absolute waste of space other than a few slightly improved performances after BR gave him a serious ars.e kicking in late December last year. Prior to that he pranced around like a fkg prima donna that owned the place.

Yep that's the sensible option. If a better player is arriving then he leaves - if it's just to save wages which leaves the squad short then it's just mistakes again from last summer

If that's our strategy and approach than we'll never see success again. I'm not saying that we have to spend like Man City, but we have to spend money if we want to win things again. If we're looking to get rid of players just for the sake of saving money, then we can start competing with Everton for Intertoto Cup.

No mate if we continue to make idiotic fk ups by signing the likes of Downing we will never see success again. From what I have seen Aspas can do a better job than our Stewie........ mind you it really wouldn't be that hard would it !!

Look at it like this deveney. Every team needs at least 2 senior players for every position. We have two wings so we'll need 4. So far we've got Downing, Aspas and (if Suarez stays) Sturridge. So we have 3 at the moment, without counting the kids. Obviously we don't even have enough wide players at the moment, but we're still looking to get rid of one? And why, to save money? Idiotic strategy.

Downing isn't the best player we have that's for sure, but this squad has a lack of players. We should concentrate on bringing more in not getting rid of senior players. If we want to sell players that much, than we should get rid of the deadwood, like Assaidi, Pacheco etc.

To me downing is worse than Assaidi. We haven't seen enough of Assaidi and ppl are quick to dismiss him. He has alot of skill and speed and still young. Downing is suppose to be at his peak and yet he is a non-factor...

Assaidi never got a look in and don't really know why. Why buy a player then never play him ! Strange signing

Downing is over paid for what he offers the team and we can get two better or promising players
in for the same outlay.

I suspect we may have to pay him to go like Joe Cole but they want him gone that's for sure and
anyone not earning their corn will be gone under this regime and no messing about.

FSG are still sore after the harsh lessons with Comolli and Dlaglish and nothing is going to stop
them getting that money back now one way or another, but its not a bad thing generally because
we are/where paying too much out for average players.

Pay for him to go !

That's ridiculous - Downing actually played well second half of last season after BR realised that Borini was either injured or poor and Sterling was going to run out of legs. We won't pay for him to go - either a club comes in for him and pays a fee and we put that towards a replacement or he stays in the squad and will no doubt be back playing in the starting line up after the left back gets constantly exposed.
