Alonso - Why didn't he play

I have not read any where a convincing explanation as to why Alonso did not play against Monaco !!
He was on the bench but not called upon !!
Apart from wild ar$ed guesses, has anyone heard of an explanation ?

Well I would asume that he did not play as he travelled to spain played what 70 mins? Then to boro played 90 mins, then travelled to Monaco all in less than a week and didnt play think the answer is burn out.
Plus he might have got injured

There seems to be a policy of resting him after mid week international games.
Hindsight is wonderful but perhaps it would have been better for him to have been rested against boro and lined up against Monaco

on itv 2 they said Alonso had a bad back but should be fit for the next game

I think we would have seen him as a sub, and probably pongolle, had not 2 players got injured

I think Alonso should have taken part in the game at some point. It was a crucial fixture and he is one of our best players. Looks like he is saving him for Arsenal. At the end of the day 4th place in the division is our best hope of Champs League next year. Winning the Champs League this season is not. Maybe he looked at it that way

all i heard was he was rested because he was that poor at the weekend and was needed more for sunday

He joined the club and was thrown in against Bolton, he needs toime to adjust, he's still young and we have Biscan, Hamman and Gerrard can step in

Stmichael he's garbage? Don't go to far. Traveling can also have an effect.

So as far as anybody knows, no explanation from Rafa, just speculation
All seems a bit odd when the Monaco game is a key game. £5m at stake for qualification etc. Stevie G not fully fit etc. Garcia goes off and we replace with Josemi and Alonso is still on the bench. Then the next sub is Warnock, everything but Alonso and finally Kewell for the last 15mins - strange !!
