Liverpool striker Michael Owen will sign a contract extension with the Merseyside club.

According to the Sunday Mirror, the England international won't sign for more than one more year.

Manager Gerard Houllier wanted the 24-year old to sign a five-year contract, but Owen isn't prepared to commit for more than one year.

An Anfield insider told the Sunday Mirror: "Gerard Houllier was looking for a much longer deal that would have kept Michael at Liverpool until he was nearly 30.

"But, understandably, the player isn't keen to sign up for that length of deal given the uncertainty at the club and the lack of success in terms of trophies. Another season at least takes some of the pressure off Gerard Houllier and leaves Owen's options open."

We shouldn't sell Owen under any circumstances.  Houllier should go first.  We can't sell him to fund more of Houllier's mistakes in the transfer market!
