In real terms - What will be 'acceptable'?

We had an excellent season in 2005/6 and last season was a relative disappointment (in terms of league and domestic cups) despite the Champions League final. What does Rafa have to do this season to convince you? Will you turn on him if he fails to deliver? Is it acceptable to spend many millions and make no further progress towards the league title most of us want so badly? Do Champions League finals make up for no improvement in the league or does it simply deflect attention?

2004/5

Premiership : 5th
Champions League : Winners
FA Cup : 3rd round
League Cup : Runners-Up

2005/6

Premiership : 3rd
Champions League : Last 16
FA Cup : Winners
League Cup : 3rd round

Club World Championship : Runners-Up
European Super Cup : Winners
Community Shield : Winners

2006/7

Premiership : 3rd
Champions League : Runners-Up
FA Cup : 3rd round
League Cup : Quarter-Final

Plenty of cup finals and wins in each of his first three seasons, however many are laughing at us and writing us off as title contenders already. Knee jerks most of them mind, while some/most on here have worries we're hardly writing our title off just yet

Voted at least second. But I'll say more, second very close to the league title. That would be acceptable, as in little difference of points, luck counts.

With the amount of new signings, I'd say anything goes, tbh.

Far too much impatience these days...

I went for at least second. I'm not saying that if we don't get second we should get rid of Rafa. I'm saying that we need to be seeing progress in the prem and to me anything less than second would show no progress. If we were to finish outside the top 4 thats when i would become very concerned.

Top 3 is a minimum and to do well in one of the cups.

But the demands by some fans border on the ridiculous.

Next season is the time to judge this season's acquisitions IMMHO.

weve been saying that for 2 long. a manager comes in, we give him 5 years, he leaves after 4 1/2. new manager comes in, we give him 5 years.

Im not saying i expect anything in particular, maybe just some cohesian in the team, but if we aint going forwards then we're lagging behind.

And you will still bemoan him at every opportunity.

Hang on a sec, lets analyse the "new signings" excuse. If Rafa signed the right players in the first place he wouldn't need to bring in a whole load of new players every season, surely the first couple of seasons should have been the foundation building seasons.

And secondly if he is spending big then surely big name players should be producing, or are we to believe players do need time to settle?

I was thinking earlier about the strikers under Rafa

Sinama Pongolle
Fowler
Morientes
Baros
Cisse
El Zhar
Mellor
Bellamy
-------------------
Crouch
Kuyt
Torres
Voronin

That's quite a lot for only three and a bit seasons, three whole SQUADs worth of strikers excluding players like Luis Garcia, Diouf, Smicer etc.

If he carries on chopping and changing every season will that entitle him to be manager as long as he likes? He may not always have had the money to bring in the players he really wanted, but then he shouldn't have splashed out on players he didn't......................... Three Skodas don't equal a Ferrari
