Reds may play off for CL football
Champions League, Thursday May 26 2005
Liverpool have been offered an opportunity by Welsh champions TNS to play Champions League football next season.

The Reds bid to gain entry to Europe's premier club competition took a bizarre twist on Thursday when Mike Harris, owner of the Welsh club, offered to face the new Champions League holders.

TNS have earned a place in the qualifying stages by claiming the Welsh title. Harris is now proposing a one-leg tie, possibly at the Millennium Stadium, with the winner taking the place in the first qualifying round which belongs to TNS by right.

"We would be supportive of this idea if it could be achieved with the approval of UEFA, the English FA and the FA of Wales, without in any way devaluing our league's future place in Europe," Harris told the club's official website.

"It would help to raise the profile of the Welsh domestic league and have the additional benefit of offering Liverpool a way of defending the title."

While UEFA insist they will not change the rules for the European champions, the Merseysiders may be handed a lifeline by one of Europe's smallest clubs.

Take from itv

Did anyone see that program on the success last night??

Ally Mccoist said how it be called the champions league if the champions are not in it to defend it???

And teams like Everton and Man U get in it when they have won NOTHING!!!

Yer I think it should be called the european cup again just because champions  league doesn't suit it because champions are known as the team who wins the league so if it is called the champions league don't you think the name is saying that just league winners should be allowed in ???

But since chelsea are the league winners so just as well they arn't the rules but the name of it is still stupid.

It was actually Carragher who said how can it be called the Champions League if the champions aren't in it? McCoist is just repeating, although it doesn't really matter who said it as it damn f*cking right!

yer why did they even change it to the champions league?

I think it was because only people at the top of there leagues could qualify but then more and more teams when into qualifiers and then the name didnt apply properly.

UEFA do come up with some fun rules and names!!!

If that happened then we would definately owe a favour to TNS because if its allowed then realisticly they must know that they dont have much chance against Liverpool?

Thats the whole idea. They know that they won't make it to the Champions league so they want to go out playing Liverpool instead of some team nobodies ever heard of from eastern europe it makes sence really they will make more money, we get a route into the champions league.

But it will never happen because the Welsh FA says that a team from the League of Wales has to play in the in the competition (the Liverpool v TNS game would be before the champions league qualifiers and so a welsh team would not have played in it) . :(

Big guns coming out in favour of Liverpool ... G14 clubs.. we will get in ppl have belief.. :)

BIG GUNS BEHIND LIVERPOOL BID
Press Report 27 May 2005

Pressure has increased on UEFA to include Liverpool in the Champions League next season after G14, the grouping of elite European clubs, called for the Reds to be allowed to defend their trophy.

G14 was the body that forced UEFA to expand the Champions League in 1998 by threatening to set up a breakaway competition and now they have thrown their weight behind Liverpool, one of their founder members.

A G14 spokesman said: "We support the desire to see Liverpool defend their trophy and the matter will be raised at our management board meeting next month. We believe UEFA should look at ways of allowing this to happen."

The organisation is made up of 18 powerful clubs including Real Madrid, AC Milan and Bayern Munich - as well as Manchester United and Arsenal - and a formal approach will be made to UEFA after the G14 meeting in Amsterdam on June 9.

Meanwhile, the FA's chairman Geoff Thompson, who is also a UEFA vice-president, has continued lobbying for there to be five English clubs in the Champions League so Liverpool can defend their crown.

His main argument is that nearly all the 52 UEFA member countries would be given an extra place in the Champions League in similar circumstances - apart from England, Spain and Italy because they are already allowed four teams in the competition.

The FA believe that is an inconsistency in the regulations and that even if UEFA are not convinced on this occasion they should change the rules for the future.

Thompson said: "We are working extremely hard to try to secure the extra place for Liverpool.

"Our basic concern is to ensure that all 52 countries have the same opportunity. There is an additional place guaranteed should the champions come from 49 countries in Europe but not for the other three - England, Italy and Spain.

"We are saying that there should be a level playing field and that every country should have the same opportunity."

Hope we get it ,but the last bit of that quote is almost a contradiction. You could argue that a level playing field  could only be achieved  if ALL countries had the same number of entrants to start with.

Uefa and the FA ,couldn't score in a knocking shop at happy hour.
