Michael Owen has played down speculation suggesting he could return to Liverpool during the summer.

It has been mooted that a clause has been inserted into the Newcastle United star's contract stipulating that The Reds may take up an option to re-sign him at the end of this season.

Having joined the Geordies in a £17 million deal from Real Madrid in August, reports coming from the North East have asserted that the England man could return to his former club for a knockdown fee of £12.5 million.

But Owen, who will return to Anfield in a playing capacity for the first time on Boxing Day, has joined Newcastle in refuting the claims, saying: "I signed a four-year contract with Newcastle and I'm very pleased with that decision.

"When I joined Newcastle we were second bottom and I came prepared for a fight. Fortunately, things have improved since then."

seems strange  ???

but he didn't deny it as such  :D

When he first signed for Newcastle there was talk of the clause in his contract.

Whether its true or not is another matter though.

i think it is true as just like with rafa, he never ruled out his interest in Owen, even though he was saying we had four strikers, as were were actually interested. No one at Newcastle has ruled out that this clause is actually there but instead you have Owen replying I signed a four year contract. That doesn't answer the question

Hopefully after the world cup, Cisse will be worth around £12m which would just about cover the clause in Owens contract if the reports are correct. I think that would be a great bit of business for us, getting rid of an ok striker in exchange for a deadly one. Whether it pans out like that though is another matter.

We're linked with Zebina

TalkLFC
THE January transfer rumour mill swung into action last night with various reports that Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has targeted a £4m deal for Juventus defender Jonathan Zebina as one of his mid season signings. Zebina, 27, has struggled to maintain a place in Fabio Capello's first team and may welcome the opportunity for a new challenge with the European Champions.

Benitez, despite the recent run of defensive solidity, has long been keen to bring in reinforcements for his rearguard although it was thought that a centre back was his priority. However Zebina can play at right back or in the middle which makes him an attractive proposition in times where financial prudence is required at Anfield. Given Benitez's penchant for versatile players, it may well be that Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia and Steve Finnan will have a fight on their hands come January time.

It is not the first time that Zebina has been linked with the Reds though. It was widely reported that Gerard Houllier was keen to bring the young Frenchman to Anfield, a player he'd worked with extensively at the Clairefontaine academy, at the turn of the century. No such deal materialised although the supposed latest interest might finally see Zebina make the switch to the Premiership.

No official comment has been made by either club as yet.

Zebina is a good solid defender in the mould of Carra. He would fit into the LFC squad with ease!!

Yet again we are being linked with every man and his dog!! I love the transfer windows...

I think he has looked poor the few times i have seen him, not really that strong and from what i recall he gave away so many fouls.

I might be wrong, but thats my only recollection of him.

Just give me Anton Ferdinand. No way would he be worth any more than 7 mil. If so, don't touch him cos it would be a rip off.

Is this Kompany guy any good?  I've heard rave reviews and I've played Football Manager 2006 myself so I know he's a legend in that, but I've never seen the boy play for real.
