We now have a newly signed striker who isnt good enough to start (even if it's just for a few months) and a midfielder who -for all intents and purposes is a squad player- expects to start regardless of the position despite not being good enough for a CM role or a wide forward role.

If we hadnt signed the pair we'd be looking at a better CF (Bacca as you suggest despite me not liking him) and a better midfielder (Kovacic, Illaramendi, Yarmolenko, etc) who would walk straightinto the starting 11 in their respective positions.

And before someone suggests that we need to improve the squad to become competitive, I think we have a good enough bench without needing to add the likes of Milner and Ings. Lallana, Markovic, Ibe, Can, Lucas are all backup for the midfield spots and Balotelli, Origi, Lambert, Borini are all backup for the forwards.

Agreed Ace, at this moment, the signings of Milner and Ings look pointless and counterproductive, despite the fact that both of them are not bad players. It seems like we just added new faces for no reason, and it's never a good thing to sign too many new faces at once. The squad didn't need improvement, the first 11 did.

IMO, these two will just get in the way, especially Milner, who was most likely promised a starting role and will have to start ahead of the likes of Can, Henderson, Lucas or maybe even Kovacic or Illaramendi (or whoever we sign).

I agree, I can't see Milner wanting to swap the bench at City for the bench at Anfield, as you say he must have been given certain guarantee's that unless his form tanks dramatically he is going to be a regular starter.

Very strong rumors this evening that Ayre is close to finishing off a deal for Bacca, we should know more within next 24 hours one way or another

Tony Barrett (Times)

After snaring Firmino, Liverpool have renewed their attempt to sign Clyne. An improved offer (£10.5m rising to £12.5m) has gone in.

Clyne is a decent player but Im a bit gutted we are signing him as that means we are reverting back to a back 4, if Hendo and Milner are our CM's I'd much prefer to play 3 at the back and have the extra man in the middle of the park.

I'm guessing the plan is something like this when everyone is fit

                   Mignolet

Clyne     Skrtel     Sakho     Moreno

                      Can
   Henderson             Milner

        Firmino           Coutinho
                   Sturridge

We could still play 4-3-3.

As things stand:

                                     Mignolet

                    Clyne    Skrtel    Sakho    Moreno

                                      Lucas
                              Milner      Hendo

                     Frimino                  Coutinho

                                  Sturridge

Obviously I'd prefer Can over Milner but Milner will probably be a regular for us. Maybe a bit lack of creativity in that midfield but I could think of much worse.

That back 4 and midfield is not top 4 standard imo.

Think 4-3-3 will be a real option.

Still some questions about Moreno, the lads still learning, Sturridge will maybe play half a season so need quality cover/competition for him and of course Clyne isn't actually signed yet but I'd be happy with .

.                                        Mignolet
.   Clyne ?            Skrtel                         Sakho            Moreno ?

.                                          Can
.                      Henderson               Milner

.              Firmino                                     Coutinho
.                                    Sturridge ?

We are splashing the cash because we know Sterling won't be kicking a ball for us again, the moment the club pulled out of those scheduled talks with his agent he was gone.
