Surely you can't call the six-seven years spent at AC Milan as sh8t.

Unless Ukraine is the name of his house in Milan... your post should be therefore ignored.

In fairness I think LFC2007 was having a pop at me, of course I meant that Schevchenko has been sh1t ever since he came to the prem, he was immense in AC Milan except in the final of the champions league against us ;-)

They both look overpriced to me, but then again it's probably worth noting that neither represent too much of a gamble based on what we've seen. You are getting proven Premiership quality and for that you've got to pay. You are buying two players who are arguably the best players at their respective clubs, two lads who aren't going to go missing Away at Hull, and two blokes who in all probably won't get involved in trying to smash one of their teammates heads in with a seven iron. Based on what we've seen from them previously, neither give you the impression they'll be blinging it up in the Newz bar on a Tuesday night, giving it the "Westside" with the inverted "V" signs and no doubt sporting a skew-whiff baseball cap complete with some indecipherable diamante logo.

No, with these two blokes you are buying proven quality and maturity. Proven good porfessionals, who almost certainly would and will improve our team overnight. Neither have won much so you are buying hunger, blokes who would rightly consider this their first last and only chance to win the Premiership for example. You are buying players who you absolutely know will be able to aclimatise, to fit in with the dressing room from day one, players who are in all likelyhood right at their peak.

Will they be worth the cash? Well it's really a question of how much they improve us I guess. If we were to go and win the Premiership with both Keane and Barry in the team, then obviously they are well worth the fees. If on the other hand we are well behind the leaders again but still finish inside the top four, it would probably be legitimate to come to the conclusion that we could have done that anyway and saved ourselves some dosh.

Clearly we need to buy a striker, if for no other reason than Torres could potentially get injured. Now I know they have fans on here, but I am absolutely convinced that if Toores did get injured and we asked either Kuyt or Voronin to fill in on his own up top, we'd be fecked pretty sharpish. Babel possibily, and only possibly maybe able to cover for a game or two, but really we need quality. Keane works for me. Provided he's not being brought in so as to facilitate sillyness with the selection I think he'll be a good buy. If we bring him in and play 4-4-2, then for me we improve. We also then have the option (or indeed possibility if you prefer) of resting him or Torres and going 4-5-1. Similarly Barry is better on the left side in a 4-4-2 than anyone else we have currently, and in all probablity better at being the link man in a 4-5-1 than Alonso currently is. His though is the signing out of the two I could live most with forgetting about, but I can certainly see the attraction of signing just about the best left footed midfielder in the Premiership right now.

Like I've said before a couple of times, I'm not exactly a "In Rafa I trust"er but i do in the main think that when the manager spends big he tends to get it right. I'm pretty confident that if we sign these two players, he will this time as well.

Great post Bigmick

Pretty much sums up my take on the whole thing.

Keane will not be coming as a squad player but as a 1st teamer. What will Rafa do with the formation??

Options -

1) 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 (Torres and Keane upfront) ??
2) Move Gerrard out to the right and let RK play off Torres ??
3) Play RK on the left of the 3 off Torres and move Babel to the right ??

My preference would be option 3 with the team taking shape like so...

Reina

Arbeloa
Carragher
Agger
Dossena

Mascha (Xabi to start if Mascha goes to Olympics)
Barry

Keane
Gerrard
Babel

Torres

That team excites me.

Only Torres and Reina have not had the full summer off so we should be cooking on gas when the season kicks off in August.

Um... Alonso and Arbeloa both went to Euro 2008 too...
And Keane isn't a winger...

Yeah but Arbeloa and Xabi hardly kicked a ball in anger during the Euro's.

My point is based on the fact that I believe Rafa's preferred formation is the 4-2-3-1 formation be deployed so well last season. I also think it brings the best out in Torres and Gerrard.

So...where does that see Keane fit in? I can see Keane drifting in from the left hand side or rotating with Gerrard and Babel to form a deadly attaking formation.

Xabi played much more than Reina...

Reina

Agger
Skrtel
Carra

Dossena
Barry
Mascha
Gerrard
Babel

Keane
Torres

Subs -

Hyppia
Arbeloa
Alonso
Kuyt
+ young boys

I dont think we'll see Babbel playing wingback but while we'er talking   3 5 2 Barry would be our best option to play down the left IMO.

Rafael Benitez confident of Robbie Keane deal

Rafael Benitez remains confident of reaching a successful conclusion in his attempt to complete the £20 million signing of Robbie Keane, writes Ian Winrow.

Benitez and Liverpool believe Levy's decision to report the club to the Premier League will come to nothing and that a deal will be struck that will permit Keane to join Benitez's squad within the next week.

The manager is also hopeful of completing the £18 million transfer of Gareth Barry from a reluctant Aston Villa and with Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso due to report back on Friday for the first time since helping Spain to Euro 2008 success, Benitez's pre-season preparations will begin to gather momentum.

I dont think its gonna be £23m straight, if anything the fee will be about £18m rising to £23m (if that £23m is correct) based on success which suits us fine, if hes successful the club will be successful and we shouldnt mind shelling out the extra few quid!

Lot of people have moaned about Barry and Keane but I want both of them here, they are proven premiership players with great attitudes who are hungry for success and would fit right in needing no time to settle and we could hit the ground running, if we have to pay over the odd's then so be it, we have missed out on too many good players in the past by not paying a few quid extra!

I hope the rumour about the medical is true, Saint is it a decent source??? Can anyone shed anymore light on this rumour?!!!

my god!! I have wanted robbie keane to come to us for ages.. this, if it goes through, is another giant step forward following the sinings of torres and  mascha last year!

and barry... but im not quite as excited about him:p
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

Well 23 million is absolutely top dollar, but he's a top player. The only, one and only problem I have with us shelling out quite so much for both Keane and Barry is that we've waited so long to do it. One or two posters on here have been banging on about Barry for a few years now, and in fairness he's been the best genuinely left sided British midfielder for at least a couple of seasons. Similarly Keane has hardly burst upon the scene out of nowhere, I think he's Irelands all-time top scorer and has scored and assisted regularly for a few seasons now in the Prem.

Had we have signed either or both players two seasons ago, we'd have probably saved ourselves 25 million on what we are going to eventually pay I should have thought. Like I say, its a small gripe but had we have signed Keane instead of Kuyt and Barry instead of Babel, we might have been a better team a bit quicker than we are going to be.

EDIT- I do know that of course we signed Babel one season ago and not two, but I couldn't think of a player starting with B that had cost what Barry would have then. Editorial license there I'm afraid, sorry for the inacuracy but you get my point anyway.

I'd like to see him in a liverpool shirt but is he worth $20million??? I understand it is a transfer between 2 english clubs so it is always at a higher cost but I still feel its a little steep! ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
