Liverpool are reported to have rekindled their interest in giant Benfica defender Luisao.

The Reds have been monitoring the Brazilian international for some time and even submitted an offer for him - understood to have been around €10 million (£6 million) - last summer.

They were unsuccessful at that time and subsequently went on to purchase Daniel Agger in January.

However, with the young Dane still to fully adapt to the rigours of life at Anfield, boss Rafa Benitez is looking to further strengthen his defence and is ready to move for Luisao again.

The imposing centre half will have done his stock at Anfield no harm with a couple of excellent displays against The Reds as Benfica knocked them out of this season's UEFA Champions League - including the winning goal in the first leg in Portugal.

Benitez is prepared to raise his already substantial offer for the player, but Benfica are understood to be very reticent to sell.

However, the player has hinted he would be interested in a move to the Premiership outfit, stating: "Everything depends on Benfica, but it is logical that I want to progress in the world of football."

Don’t we already have 4 first team squad centre backs for next year: Carragher, Hyypia, Agger and Paletta.

And 3 of our most exciting prospects are centre backs: Roque, Hobbs and Antwi.

So why would we go and spend a large amount on another centre back? I just can’t see us buying a centre back, what would be the point?

Is Paletta getting his work permit ?  I thought he was going on Loan for a year. Sami is getting older so will need to rest for parts of next season and if Agger has more injuries we will still be thin at the back.
Roque, Hobbs and Antwi are still a few years away from 1st team action so another CB would provide good cover. As long as it doesnt consume $$$$ for other positions it can only be seen as a good idea.

I was under the understanding that Gabriel Paletta has a Spanish passport. The deal has been agreed, and confirmed by Rafa, Rick Parry and the official website. And to presume that Agger will suffer more injuries is a bit strange, why not presume other players will also get injured and assemble a squad of 100 players? Hyypia will be fine, he will won’t need any extensive rest.

If this is true, it could be signalling the end for Big Sami, which I dn't really want.

The reason I think that Agger will sustain more injuries next season is:

1- He has been injured for most of the time he has been with us

2- He is still pretty young, Who's body has gone through a lot of growth in the recent years and in a way will still be adapting to itself. This is the reason that Steven Gerrard experienced so many injuries early on in his career.

3- He is still a little light weight and the physical nature of the Premiership may bang him around a bit.

Now I'm not expecting you to agree with me I'm just giving you my reasons and opionions on my statement. I'm not hoping any injuries on anyone especially not Agger as he looks a strong prospect.

Luisao would be a great buy at the moment.

Hyypia definately needs to be dropped for some games if Rafa feels that the opposing strikeforce may take advantage of his lack of speed.

Agger wont be featuring the majority of games next season because he's still young..etc.etc but we all know he would be a future world-beater.

Luisao and Jamie Carragher in my opinion would be a solid defensive pairing as long as the former can adapt fast enough to the pace and style of the English game. Hyypia would still feature prominently in most games but should other factors arise ie. injuries, suspension Paletta and Luisao would be pretty great cover.

Jamie Carragher has pretty much made his place in the starting eleven all his but it doesnt hurt to have good players to take his place should anything happen.

I would welcome Luisao to Anfield. The more quality the better as far as I am concerned!

Jesus, a guy has two good games against us and suddenly he is a transfer target.

On that undertaking, look out for this headline later this week:

TNS' goalkeeper looks set to oust Jerzy Dudek and Pepe Reina and become Anfield No 1.

The guy is a Brazilian international so therefore must be a decent player. Hence me making the comment that the more quality the better. It's all good and well going for all these top young players (Agger, Palletta etc) but we need to have the right balance of youth and experience.

For what it's worth I don't think we will go after/get Luisao but that's not the point I was trying to get over.

THE MORE QUALITY IN THE SQUAD THE BETTER AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED! :;):
