It is claimed that Rafa accepts he will not be able to make a like-for-like purchase to replace Gerrard so is determined to recruit some proven talent to show supporters that the Reds haven't become a selling club.

The trio of highly-talented players were all at some point wanted by former boss Gerard Houllier.

Theres been reports of Rafa wanting Owen Hargrieves aswell as Aimar.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Liverpool are keeping tabs on Malaga defender Juanito who will be out of contract at the end of the season.

The Reds are understood to have dispatched scouts to watch the 24-year-old twice in the last month, although boss Rafa Benitez has held a long-term interest in the centre back - who can also play as a defensive midfielder.

Benitez was considering a move for Juanito last summer when he moved for then Malaga team-mate Josemi, and has kept a watching brief on the player's progress.

The fact he will become a free agent in the summer makes him an even more interesting option, and Malaga - who are in a desperate battle to avoid relegation from La Primera - are still stalling on offering him a new deal.

Juanito's agent, Ramon Arasa, confirmed he has fielded interest from abroad in his client, and believes the player is more likely to move on at the end of the season than stay at La Rosaleda.

"At this moment I believe the destiny of the player is closer to another club," he stated.

"We have propositions from Spain and Europe."

On the possibility of the player being offered a new contract by Malaga, he continued: "This subject is still on stand-by.

"Malaga have not said never to a possible new deal, but time is passing."

If Liverpool do, as expected, firm up their interest in the stopper they are likely to face competition from Deportivo La Coruna who have also been mooted as long-term admirers.

Benitez has already brought in six players from La Liga, and is known to favour the Spanish market for the value he feels he can achieve from it.

19-year-old Liverpool midifelder Robbie Foy is preparing to join Chester City on a month's loan deal after impressing their manager Ian Rush.

Foy - a Scotland under-21 international - has figured for the reserves all season but doesn't look set to figure in the club's long term plans.

Chester chairman Stephen Vaughan says: "Robbie has had an excellent grounding at Anfield. Hopefully it will lead to a permanent deal, but in the short term, Robbie will be a great addition."

Liverpool and Newcastle are set to compete with Birmingham City during the summer for the signature of Uruguyan scoring sensation Walter Pandiani.

Pandiani has admitted he will not be returning to Spain when his loan expires in May and Birmingham would have no trouble raising the 4 million Deportivo want for him.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez knows all about Pandiani from his days in charge of Valencia and was given a reminder of the striker's talents during their recent defeat by Birmingham.

Manchester United and Liverpool are both tracking South African star Delron Buckley.

The 27-year-old has rekindled his career this season after moving from Bochum to Arminia Bielefeld.

The forward, who can also play on the wing, has bagged 14 goals in Die Bundesliga this term - including two against Bayern Munich last month - and a host of clubs from around Europe are now taking a close interest.

Buckley is understood to have a release clause of just €500,000 and together with the fact he has a German passport - he is now proving an attractive transfer option.

Both United and Liverpool sent scouts to check on Buckley during Arminia's midweek German Cup win over Hansa Rostock and they saw him play the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 success.

Buckley's agent Rob Moore spoke exclusively to skysports.com about his client.

"As an issue, I don't really want to talk about it as he is doing so well," Moore told skysports.com.

"But yes, I can confirm that there is a lot of interest in him."

Speaking of Liverpool and United's interest, he said: "They have not contacted me, but it doesn't surprise me, he has had a very, very good season.

"He spent a number of years at Bochum, but they made it hard for him to leave. He left in the summer and is now showing how good he is."

The interest in Buckley is not only confined to England, as clubs from Germany, Holland and Spain are all understood to be making checks.

While there is nothing concrete on the table for Buckley, it is thought that the race for his signature will heat up in the coming weeks.

PROTO GOING CHEAP
The agent of La Louviere goalkeeper Silvio Proto is determined to cash on his client with a move to England. Pietro Alatta said: "Manchester United and Arsenal are fighting for him. Silvio is also the most wanted player in Belgium. Almost all clubs in Italy love him. Roma, Fiorentina, Siena, Vicenza, Genoa - all want him. Palermo even made a bid for him. But Proto prefers a move to England. No problem. Manchester United and Arsenal have started a war for him. Both have seen him several times and are very impressed." The 21-year-old Belgium international could be snapped up for just £428 000.

Thats not exactly exclusive news.

He has 1 year left on his contract after this season, and the fact that no negotations have began tell a story in it's self.

iverpool have emerged as shock contenders for Arsenal's contract rebel Edu.

Valencia, Manchester United and Barcelona are amongst a host of clubs interested in signing the Brazilian ace who has been told to sign a new deal this week or leave Highbury.

Arsenal have offered the player £30,000-a-week in wages but his agent is looking for £45,000-a-week and Liverpool would be prepared to pay the price for a player who supported Liverpool as a boy.

Arsene Wenger has made it clear that Edu must sign now or sling his hook. He said: "We need the situation with Edu sorted out very quickly, certainly by this week. If he is going to stay that is excellent, but if he will not sign a new contract then it is better he leaves in January."

Edu will be out of contract and available on a free transfer in the summer. As he only has six months left on his Arsenal contract he is free to discuss a possible summer move with other clubs now.

The reason he is leaving is because he wants first place and more money, are you sure we can gurantee him this, we definately can't gurantee any sun!
