Not only does it alert opposition teams that the player might be available but it will more than likely drive the players price up. There is the possibility that these quotes have been recycled from a previous interview but the other thing that puzzles me no matter when the comments were made is, since when does Liverpool Football Club brazenly advertise what players it is going to target?

Yes there has always been media speculation surrounding us signing certain players but I can't really remember a Liverpool manager sitting in front of a journalist and saying, 'yes we want to sign ......'
To me the Liverpool way has always been for the manager and club to deny whether or not they are after a player or at the very most they would acknowledge that the player was a good one and was one of many being considered. Is that what is going on here but the press twisting it? Possibly. The cynics may even go as far as saying that it some kind of cock-up by Rick Parry or reaction to the supposed pressure he's found himself under in the wake of the ticketing problems and Rafa's 'supposed' public dig at him last week. Whatever it is I still don't understand why the club/Parry would do this.

I still think that it would be a decent signing for sub £10m or a swap involving Cisse but anything more and I just think it could be money down the drain.

I completely agree. Everytime Rick Parry opens his mouth at the moment it annoys me. I know Chief Executives have jobs to do but can anybody name one CE who isn't annoying? In what way does it benefit us for Parry to be telling all and sundry that we want to sign somebody. It is very rare that these protracted transfers actually end up with a positive outcome.

I'm no rocket scientist and I'd be lying if I said I knew everything about the ins and out of transfer dealings but surely it is as simple as - identify the payer, approach the club, make sure the player is keen, make an offer.

Why is it that whenever Parry is involved in our clubs transfer (or contract!!!) negotiations, things tend to get c*cked up - Owen, Gerrard, Vidic, Alonso, Alves, Simao - the list goes on.

I've always been extremely vociferous in my support for the players, the manager (even the ex-Chairman) but I'm sick and tired of Mr Parry. I'm not interested in hearing explanations as to who we want, why we can't get them, who is about to sign a new contract, who is not... Stop talking and start getting something done!!!! Sorry, rant over....  :)

I think Rick Parry will find himself sacked soon and some one else will step in. We are Liverpool surporters and we give are own a second chance but he makes to many mistakes if Rafa does'nt like him then he can't be doing his job to the standerd this club need. With the SG fisco the time it took the new investors to come in and are inabilty in the transfer market is just to much get rid now and get some one in with some drive.

I think it is just dust in the media's eyes, as we are not after Simao at all.

Anyway I would not want Simao at Liverpool. I do not think he is good enough.

Who's good enough?

Malouda isn't IMO good enough to join us! I watch every week the summaries of the french football week on TV (because I'm Swiss), and he is NOT a top world class player.

yea..he was brilliant in the world cup aswell... and the champions league this season...ask realmadrid fans about him... me being one...id tell you he gave us alot of trouble over both legs !
very good player and with the transfer fee being mentioned...would be a great deal imo....

not many outstanding LWs in world football today... and the top LWs are either unavailable or would only be sold for big money...so ...i think he or D.Silva would be our only realistic targets with him more likely to join !

Just spotted this article on NewsNow.co.uk linking us with Wigans Leighton Baines. Article Link

From what I've seen of him he's a very promising young LB and could be well worth a look. The price quoted is around £5m which ain't bad for a young english prospect with premiership experience. The fact he's from merseyside and supported Liverpool as a boy (Were've we heard that before  :glare: ) could go in our favour shoulde Rafa decide to make a move.

Yet another link to David Villa in the press.

Premiership trio chase Valencia's Villa

Tottenham and Chelsea face competition from Liverpool in the race to sign Valencia winger David Silva.

The 21-year-old has a £40m buy-out clause in his contract but it is thought he could be prised away for about £12m.

Silva, who is unhappy with the terms of the contract that he signed at La Mestalla last summer, admitted there had been interest in him.

He said: "The truth is we have received offers from other teams that value us."

Villa, Atletico Madrid skipper Fernando Torres, fellow strikers Samuel Eto'o, Carlos Tevez, and Dimitar Berbatov, Real Zaragoza's Argentina defender Gabriel Milito, Benfica captain Simao and Brazilian right-back Daniel Alves are among the names linked with summer switches to Merseyside.

Former Reds star John Barnes insists Liverpool's American owners must keep their promise to back Rafael Benitez in the summer transfer market if they are to challenge league champions Manchester United and Chelsea.

"I'm sure if those players are available, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal will also be after them," Barnes said.

"Whether they come to Liverpool or not I don't know, but that's the type of quality they should be looking for, who can come and go straight into the team and not just be a squad player.

"There is not a single important area. You are not going to buy one player and close a 21-point gap, you need more quality in the team in every department, particularly up front.

"I think they need a striker, another defender and a creative midfield player. As for who that is going to be, there is a lot if talk about David Villa, but I'm not sure if financially they can compete.

"It will be interesting, but I'm hopeful for next year because Rafa has done well with what he has and hopefully he can improve the squad and they can get even better." Article Link

£12m for a player that supposedly has a buyout clause of more than 4 times that amount seems to be bullshite. Are these jouno's just making it up as they go along. Don't get me wrong Villa for 12 million would be an outstanding deal but for possibly europes hottest property I just think it's slightly optomistic.

Here's a rumor that doesn't have much to do with LFC, but I found it interesting...

Valencia are supposedly keen on signing Diego Forlan from Villarreal. Some say as a replacement for Villa, as it looks likely he might move on..

That's just a rumor, though. I doubt Villarreal would sell him to Valencia, keeping in mind the rivalry. If they did sign him, it might just be to partner Villa upfront also.   :D
