Jermaine pennant - In the bag

Liverpool Football Club - The Rumour Mill

Surely Pennant is a squad player at best, he's not an elegant player and I doubt anyone - at this stage - would call him a match winner. We need match winners, he have enough luke warm squad players as it is. Better to save your money for someone better.

To be fair I think the Premiership has risen in standards since the days you could win it with players like Ripley and Wilcox as automatic starters, but it's a good analogy.

I agree with your point totally.  Efficiency over flair every time.  And with Pennant you know the delivery will be good.  He's only 23 and surely his all round game has a good chance of developing alongside players like Gerrard and Alonso.

oh i dont know, those two could cross a decent ball and thats all shearer and sutton needed.
that blackburn side would go pretty close to the title now, that version of shearer before the cruciate injuries would get enough goals on his own to certainly get you in the mix.
and the united side they beat were much better than this side united have now.
colin hendry was as brave as they come too.

Pennent is an average player, wasn't good enough for Arsenal not good enough for us simple as that. We are hoping to challenge next season then we need better quality on the right than pennent. Guily yeah like the looks for a short term deal.

Im still waiting for Joaquin and Ronaldinho to sign Wizard

I certainly this turns out to be just another rumor reported by Krap Talk. Personaly I don't rate Pennant as much as the others do here  (strange how everyone all of a sudden does after Stu left, he was the only one praising him when he was on here ).

Perhaps I wouldn't be so against him signing with us had he had not had problems with the law.

AB mate, that's complete bollox that no one on here rated Pennant until after Stu left, where did you pull that one from??  Your @rse?

Granted Stu is perhaps the only person I have ever encountered that actually believes Pennant is superior to SWP, which is also bollox.  Despite Stu over-rating Pennant he is a good player and for 4 million I'd definitely take him.  We need a right sided player, but we need a top striker more, so getting Pennant on the cheap would allow us to spend the bulk of our funds on the priority.

As I said above though, I don't see the point on Giuly and Pennant, it has to be one or the other.

I personaly can't remember anyone else mentioning that we should sign him. Perhaps I'm wrong, but many critisized Stu at the time for even mentioning Pennant.

The signing of Pennant wouldn't mother me as much had he  kept out of trouble.

Look through this thread and you will see a number of people mention that they rate Pennant.

It was a good Blackburn side no doubt.  But I just think that the Premiership is a higher standard now than it was then.  There were so many banker wins for the top sides then.  But now I think the mid-to-lower Premiership sides are much stronger than in those days.

And I hate to say it, but with the points total that Chelsea side has reached the last couple of seasons, I think they really have raised the bar.  I dare say the current Premiership champions would comfortably beat that Blackburn side in it's prime.

In those days you could get away with having about 14 quality players, but nowadays you need at least about 18 quality players, if not 22 to be champions.

Anyway, we've hi-jacked the thread somewhat here

I'll start a thread on this when I've more time...

Agreed there Luke, I've always rated the lad, he didn't get a fair crack of the whip at Arsenal but his behaviour didn't help him either, he was great at Leeds and Birmingham and I think he'd be a great player for us, besides I think he'd be a bargain for around £5m, how much would other right sided player cost compared to Pennant!

What about Diouf, though?

Carragher and Gerrard were here when that tw*t was, and they couldn't stop him.

I think Pennant is a good player, but there's a lot of baggage, and I'd much rather us get a clean-living winger than him.

It's make or break time, and I don't think we can afford any c*ck-ups.

Maybe the fact that Diouf was French speaking and tended to mingle more with the other French players when he was here rather than the likes of Gerrard and Carra had something to do with it.  Remember that was in Houllier's reign when allegedly there were several cliques in the dressing room.  Nowadays under Benitez apparently it's very different and players of different nationalities mingle much more.

I don't think you can tar Diouf and Pennant with the same brush though.  I see Pennant as a lad who has been badly advised and led astray.  Whereas Diouf is just a kunt.  Pennant may have had problems when he's under the influence, something which he needs to get a handle on, but Diouf certainly wasn't pi.ssed when he gobbed on that Celtic fan - disgraced the club big time.  Definitely a screw loose there.

Although i don't particularly like Pennant (but that's due to him being a threat whenever i've seen him play- which i have twice this season live), i think he'd be a good addition to the squad along with someone like Guily who would press him for a starting role. Pennant would have no option but to clean up his act as he'd know that he's not guaranteed to start as he is at birmingham.

Also, by buying two good wingers at such a low price this should hopefully give us more money to go out and buy and top-rated striker. One downside of this is that i could see him selling Garcia as he's someone we'll get a good price for and could become surplus to requirements with two new wingers and a striker (possibly two if he goes for Bellamy as well- making space by selling Cisse of course).

From teamtalk.co.uk:

Liverpool have launched a £3.5million bid to land Birmingham midfielder Jermaine Pennant, according to reports.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is desperate to add wide players to his squad and although Chile winger Mark Gonzalez is expected to finally tie up his move to Anfield, Benitez is still keen on Pennant.

The former Arsenal star made 48 appearances for Birmingham as they were relegated from the Premiership last season and had indicated his desire to stay and fight the Blues' promotion battle.

However, the St Andrews side have secretely been resigned to losing the 23-year-old should there be Premiership interest with Pennant hoping to stake a claim for England honours once new coach Steve McClaren takes over.

agree with previous posts, just dont think his the quality to bring lfc success now, however under the guidance from rafa could turn into a v.good player, i think by attempting to signing him rafa is showing again his building a team on youngsters for the future, not to challenge chavs next year

Blues reject Pennant reports - SKY SPORTS

By Andrew Scurr -   6 Jun 2006

Birmingham City have rejected reports linking Jermaine Pennant with a move to Liverpool this summer.

Speculation in Tuesday's newspapers claimed The Reds had offered £3.5 million for the former Arsenal winger, but Birmingham have again insisted that the player is going nowhere.

Following Blues' relegation to The Championship, many believed the likes of Emile Heskey and Pennant would leave St Andrews in the summer, but Pennant is thought to be keen to help the club regain their top-flight status.

"Birmingham have not received an offer of any kind from Liverpool for the player and neither does it expect one," a statement on the club's official website read.

"Managing director Karren Brady has spoken to her counterpart Ricky Parry at Liverpool and informed him that Jermaine Pennant is not for sale.

"Reacting to today's stories, Brady wants to reassure supporters that the club is determined to keep hold of its best players to give us the best chance of returning to the Premiership at the first attempt."

Brady added: "We want to get out of this division as soon as possible.

"Therefore we will be buying players and not selling them as our aim is to go into The Championship with the best squad in the league."

so when do we think he will be unveiled as a liverpool player then.........

we all know that as soon as a club comes out with a statement saying a player is going nowhere, you can normally put your house on it that a deal is on the cards..........
