6: alonso has had a quiet couple of years and we can still get some eral money for him
7: barry has had a dazzling couple of years

he is also 28 this year if we are going to sign another midfielder for that amount of money then we should atleast bring someone younger in.

Van Der Vaart, Johnson.

Exactly!
If we are to replace Alonso with an 18/20ml player, then a 28yo Barry should not be first choice
A 23yo can afford time to settle in, can a 28yo?
Theres no resale value in him, I think the initial 10ml was about right

Quite honestly none of them are worth the money but to get what you want that is the going rate.

Chelski just spent £16m on a full back and have bid a million less for a midfielder and its just not going to happen.

If we cannot pay the going rate for players at their best and at the peak of their powers then we need to try and nurture young players through, and frankly we do not have a great record with those, or buy older players that are cheaper but will do a job for a season or two.

And were not in the position to pay inflated prices for players like Chelsea!

When we spend big it has got to be money well spent, and 18/20 for barry is not money well spent!
Alonso is still a class act and wants to stay,
lets secure a class LW for that type of money,
That would give us a better chance of lifting the title!

15million on one of the top rated premiership players hitting his peak  is not over inflated tho in my opinion.

They wont take 15ml for him Dawson, its 20ml cash or take a hike!
Its a case of where we need to spend that type of cash, Barry might be able to play LM but hes no speedy winger, and thats what we need!
if we do pay that much for him, we can forget about getting a class LW
With these pair of pryks running the club into the ground we cant afford to waste cash in an area we are already strong

I like Martin O Neill and he is holding out for what he can get. If it was Gerrard going to Barca we would reject bid after bid until we got what we wanted. Why should Villa be any different. But........

It is up to us to decide if the player is worth that much and if not then get out off the deal and start to look elsewhere. There is no point in being held to ransom

i also like Martin O Neill and don't blame him for holding out for the biggest fee he can get. However, we don't have unlimited cash like Chelsea and the Scum. Therefore, we can't get ripped off on players like this and i think that 13 million is the maximum Rafa can justify for a player like Barry.  Unless they're willing to take Carson and cash....i would look else where.

Spot on Dawson. Hopefully it will be like last season with lots of false rumours before we actually sign the player we are after.

You're wrong about Van Der Vaart though mate, he's just had a cracking season and also scored over 20 goals (his highest total ever)

I am beginning to worry that the Barry transfer saga is going to finish up similar to the Heinze saga of last season...... dragging on and on.

If we withdraw from this bid, and no one else bids for Barry, Villa will be left with a dude who doesn't even want to play for them.

That amuses me.

£15 million is a fair value for Barry and if I were Aston Villa I wouldn’t take a penny less than that. But from our point of view we don’t want to spend that amount of cash on someone who is predominately a central midfielder when there are far more pressing areas of the team that need addressing.

The only solution is to offer some our players to sweeten the deal. Any of the following would be realistically good signings for Aston Villa and players we could afford to let go:

Finnan = 2-3 million
Riise = 4-6 million
Crouch = 9-12 million
Pennant = 4-5 million
Carson = 4-6 million

Those are just rough estimations but I think there is enough there for us to do a part exchange with Aston Villa meaning both clubs can do well out of the deal.
