is it jus me or does alonso seem to be a bit of a nervous character at times? does the occasion or the moment sometimes get to him?

he doesnt score nearly enough goals for someone who can launch a 70yard pin point accurate pass diagonally across the pitch. surely he should be expecting himself to put near enough every shot from within 30yards of the goal into the top corner with power and precision - i've noticed his reaction a few times this season wen he gets himself into these shooting positions and barely works the keeper... he knows he should be scoring more.

hope the yanks give rafa some money so he doesnt hav to sell xabi to buy barry.
we've only won it 5 times

Similar players, similar captains, mature and ambitious.

If Gerrard wants to walk wouldnt it make sense from his viewpoint as well as the club's to bring a replacement in?

After all as we've all said, its a mystery to sell Xavi.

Just hit me whilst reading the article in tuesdays Times when Barry says he was surprised how public Gerrard made his comments after the England game... seems he is indeed desparate for Barry to come.... why?

On the contrary, having seen Gerrard and Barry play together - they are on the same wavelength, very much in the way that Torres and Stevie have developed an understanding.

Xabi is an immense talent, but for what it's worth - Barry is a better option for us, given the EPL style of game.

We need a team out there, players that work with each other on instinct.

Rafa Benitez will contact Aston Villa with an improved bid for Gareth Barry in a renewed attempt to land his main summer transfer target.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill rejected an initial cash-plusplayers offer worth about £10million and vowed to talk Barry into staying put.

But after hearing Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard go public on his wish to replicate their England partnership at club level, Barry will make it clear that he favours a move to Anfield.

Benitez is ready to apply further pressure to his Villa counterpart by again offering him a choice of players and increasing the overall package to about £15m.

The Liverpool boss is confident it will be enough to prise Barry from Villa Park and install him alongside Javier Mascherano in an anchor role that would give Gerrard licence to push forward.

Liverpool also hope to complete the signing of Udinese's left back Andrea Dossena today. Benitez is aware he needs to generate funds to finance his buying plans and is hopeful of recouping most of his outlay on Barry by selling Xabi Alonso to Juventus, following talks with the Serie A club this week.

hello everyone

:D

I would welcome a move for Barry

One thing springs to mind though with all the talk of Alonso and loss of confidence

Momo Sissoko suffered a similar loss of form/confidence and it just maybe something to do with both players knowing their days were numbered at Anfield

I know the threads about Barry before anyone reminds me, however, Alonso seems like the one to make way so my thoughts are relevant

GARETH BARRY wants to quit Aston Villa to join Liverpool.

The Reds have had their £12million bid for the Villa skipper turned down by manager Martin O’Neill.

But Barry is determined to link up with England pal Steven Gerrard at Anfield.

He wants to play in the Champions League next season and is praying O’Neill gives in.

Barry got his first international goal in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago and captained the team after David Beckham was substituted.

The midfielder said: “I’d like things cleared up the sooner the better. It would be easier for myself and for the fans, so I’m sure we can get it done pretty soon.

Selling Xabi would be a massive mistake. Four top class midfielders are needed in the squad - Stevie, Xabi, Mascherano and Barrty would make up that quartet - Lucas is not ready yet.

I agree mate selling alonso may not be the best idea i mean i really rate barry but i think alonso is a better player on his day but then the question arises, that his days dont come often enough. either way i would like to keep them both but i it looks like barry in alonso out keep us updated guys

If O'Squeall wants more than £12m for Barry then he's having a laugh, Rafa should look elsewhere. I can't believe Xabi is/was the only good midfielder in Europe to be available at a reasonable price. I don't know how much truth there was in suggestions that O'Squeall wants £8m + Crouch which by my evaluation of Crouch would make Barry valued at the £15m-£18m bracket which is about what we paid for Mascherano and the mancs paid for Carrick and Hargreaves. That might be behind O'Squeall's valuation, comparing past purchases.

Pull out of it now Rafa, tell Barry to buy out his contract when he can and if he wants to sign, but let's not get held to ransom just cause Bazza is playing for England now

:D

Anyways, I heard barry may leave for us for 14m! I think thats a bit steep. However I think he can give us alot of quality in the squad, but I don't rate him above Alonso at all.
