Xabi is more of a slower player and needs the game to be slowed down and is more defensive, whereas Barry is more offensive. I'd welcome Barry in our team with open arms. I think him and Gerrard in the same team week in week out (with rotations obvs) he'd be amazing for us. Alonso is a good player, but he's become far too inconsistent for my liking.
People can argue that we're decreasing quality in the centre of midfield, but how do we know what? We don't. Barry looks better with better players around him (just look at England) and he'd certainly boost our goals from midfield (which definitely needs to be improved as all the expectance is on Gerrard and Torres to score).

The problem with Xabi is that he does not get forward far enough to make a creative difference. If you look at Rafa's Valencia he played a similar system to the one we do now. He had two central midfielders Albelda and Baraja. Both had defensive duties but Albelda rarely ventured forward while Baraja actually led them in scoring goals one year.
It seemed that last year Masch was the player that ventured forward. As much as I admire him, this is not his strength. Players are just more comfortable in certain areas of the pitch. I think Barry is naturally a more attacking player. Watching him for Villa, he was often found in and around the penalty area. Can barely remember Xabi that far forward this year.
This type of player is essential to the system as it allows Gerrard to play further forward and not collect the ball from deep which in turn isolates Torres.

Similar players, similar captains, mature and ambitious.
If Gerrard wants to walk wouldnt it make sense from his viewpoint as well as the club's to bring a replacement in?
After all as we've all said, its a mystery to sell Xavi.
Just hit me whilst reading the article in tuesdays Times when Barry says he was surprised how public Gerrard made his comments after the England game... seems he is indeed desparate for Barry to come.... why?

I think if we went that way, then Michael Johnson would be a much better choice.
