What the hell is going on with this deal then? If we were ready to put up the funds 24 hours after the deadline then we should have had it sown up by now.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.

my main fear about barry is he will be the type of player who hide or blend into a bad team performance, rather than stand out like gerard or nando. we need somebody who can make the difference against teams like manu...ok i'm obsessed with beating manu. if man city can find inspiration to beat them, why can't we. in the champions league when we have played all the big names like barcelona,we always raise our game and find a way to beat them.yet season after season we look not remotely interested in trying to claim the scalp of manu....do they think we can't notice the difference in attitude.

Martin O'Neill this evening reluctantly conceded Gareth Barry's move to Liverpool could still be on.

Villa had hoped the Barry saga was over on Wednesday when Liverpool missed an agreed deadline to make an acceptable bid for the England man.

But, following a further meeting with Barry and his agent, O'Neill has reluctantly accepted the deal could still go ahead.

The Villa boss told www.avfc.co.uk: "We had a meeting last Monday with Gareth and his agent at which we all agreed we would have a 5pm deadline on Wednesday and if Liverpool had not proved they had the wherewithal to proceed with the transfer deal then we would all leave that aside and go on with it.

"I was hoping that would be the case and this was not a matter of Liverpool missing the deadline by 15 minutes, as seems to have been reported.

"Liverpool first showed their interest in signing Gareth Barry almost four months ago, so this is not a case of missing a deadline by 15 minutes. That's simply not true.

"The following morning we were very upbeat on the strength of what had happened on Wednesday evening. We were very buoyant and optimistic that everything could come back to normal again.

"That wasn't to be though. On Thursday there was a meeting between Gareth's agent, myself and the player. They still felt that even though the deadline had passed they still felt Liverpool were going to come in and do the deal.

"Obviously I was disappointed to hear that. Gareth's head is a bit all over the place at the moment and they asked for some more time.

"So I've listened to what they've said and I'll go with it - reluctantly but I'll go with it. There will be no deadline and Liverpool have all the time in the world now to sign Gareth Barry. They've got up to the normal window, which is the 31st of this month.

"So it's really up to them, Gareth and his agent to sort it out. I'vedecided this is the only way forward for us really.

"I have a football club to run and I really do want people who want to play for us.

"If Liverpool at the end of it all do not come up with the money, that's no-one else's fault but their own.

"I'd be delighted if that was the case and Gareth stayed. But I would doubt that very much. The ball is very much in their court."

So now we should just sit back and wait, and then just before the window closes offer £12million take it or leave it.

I am just glad to see that MON has had to back down. :p

Kinell, O'Neill's clearly playing some long, drawn-out game of press chess with all of these announcements but it's beyond me what it all amounts to (besides making him look a complete t!t).  I'm certain we'll get Barry before too long but I expect there'll be a few more twists and turns and nonsense press releases from the Villa camp before it happens.  I just hope Barry can get his head down and focus on football once he does come.

bigmick wrote:FWIW, and you can quote me on this, the most overpriced player of the Summer in my opinion is David Bentley. The prices for both Keane and barry (Barny if you must) are top dollar but not ridiculous in my opinion. I really think people are underestimating how good these two are, and how much difference they will make to us. Keane has cost 5 mill more than we paid for Cisse four years ago, while Barry has cost exactly the same and Man Utd paid for Carrick and Hargreaves. It's only because we can all think of exotic sounding foreign based players who sound relatively cheap in comparison, but as i keep saying with these two blokes we're getting proven quality.

Time will tell of course, but I think they on't prove to be bad value when push comes to shove.

spot on , and to think we were going to go after bentely , he's good but very inconsistent as well , i thinkl spurs got ripped of as clubs know they have cash now . Another possible reason why zenit are holding out more for arshavin . Keane and barry are already adapted and proven like you have said and the risk factor is minimal compared to other players .

villa are going to be made very stupid , MON should have just accepted than offer but he's just embarassed himself even more . Barry does not want to play for Villa and MOn is being like ferguson and keeping ronaldo . 15 million now should do it and i think we should keep alonso and revert barry to the left , he's not a winger but a left midfielder with a terrific left foot and can pick out his man from a cross , got terrfic vision . Midfield like this for next season perhaps?

              Masch            Alonso

Gerrard                                       Barry

                 Keane         Torres

We have babel , kuyt , ngog and benayoun for subs and cover in any of those positions but i think we might see rotation with barry swapping alonso's position and babel on the left quite a fair bit next season or babel in straight sub for barry's postion .

Liverpool co-owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, are reported to have opted to take out loans to hand Rafa the finances required to bring Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry to Anfield this summer.

The Daily Mail claims that the American duo have decided to give Rafa the money instead of him having to offload Xabi Alonso to be able to complete such a deal.

However, plans could be met with fierce opposition as our financial situation and commitment with regards to our new stadium is well documented, and many Kopites are still baying for American blood.

I would love the additional money but not at these cause where we are going to be in deeper financial trouble than we already are . I'd rather we not get the money these way than as i don't think the owners can pay them off . They should have sold us to DIC but hicks is a greedy twa.t who held out for more .
