^ Van der vaart is one of my favorite players.  I'd go insane if we signed him, but there are rumors going around that he's going to R Madrid.  Have a horrible feeling that we will still buy Barry for insane amount of money though. :(

Van der vaart would be excellent and would cost 50%+ less than the inferior Barry.

He also goes on to say that the younger option is left footed, and can play both in central midfield and on the wing. Oh and he's not English.

I think we need super Andy G to solve this one (although I am hoping its Van Der Vaart) I think the clue is in the "But you will have to think quite a lot" which rhymes with good shot and as Van der Vaart had a good shot in the Euro's its obviously him....... :D ..............Andy........help?

i've been putting some serious effort into this one, saint, and it's fairly obvious to me that they are talking about laurent robert.

Id say due to the fact Silva doesn't want to move to England we should get Barry.

silva has made it clear he's happy in Spain so right it off.

Spanish champions Real Madrid have completed the signing of Dutch international midfielder Rafael van der Vaart from German side Hamburg for £7.1m. A potential blow for Cristiano Ronaldo, perhaps? (Spanish radio Cadena Ser, 1031 BST)

Another dream signing bites the dust, and with Diego supposedly now going to Chelsea my list of options is getting smaller and smaller. :(

probably a bit late in the day for this ditty of info, ive been busy and feel it is time to state what is probably obvious to most but why in the hell where/are LFC gonna spend £18m frekkin notes on a 28 year old central midfielder who hasnt even got any European or international experience  ??? There is not a single quality wide man in the squad, kee- rist Jermaine Pennant is the only player in the 1st team squad that wants to get to the byline. Im not gonna jump on the age old Silva/Quaresma/(insert overrated Latin American Ponce of your choice) bandwagon. But surely even £11-12million would by a great OPTION to the squad, someone who wouldnt necessarily have to start every match but could be, er, rotated (Bigmick put the gun down!) and used as a different option. Mascha, Xabi, Lucas and the Gerrard are more than a match for any central midfield unit in world football. We have the meanest and most heavily tatooed back line in Premier League history, as well as a striker that is quite possibly the best in the world, and Torres is pretty good to! C'MON DIRK LOL! (In fairness I think even the biggest Kuyt critics have to say he was arguably our best player in last years CL campaign)

So to summarize. How about something different?

Ignoring your Kuyt remarks, the rest of your post makes a lot of sense. While the mancs , Arsenal and Chelsea ,don't really play wide anymore, they all have players that CAN play wide when they need to change their style if things arn't going well. Ronaldo and Giggs can move out wide, Malouda and Phillips at Chelsea, even Arsenal who haven't really used wide players much for years have Walcott and Rosicky who can play wide when a change is needed.

They all have top quality fullbacks who can get forward and give them width when required too. Clichy, Evra, Cole, are probably the 3 best attacking fullbacks in the prem. Dossena has a lot to do to match them.

We have Pennant :(

It is a bit disheartening to think that Van der Vaart is going for no more than 8 million and we are fighting for Barry at around 18 million.

I agree with you mate. Not annoyed that we're after Barry although I do think he's overpriced, but Van de Vaart for £7-8 million has gotta be one of the best deals of the summer, shocked that Rafa didn't have him on our radar.
