Apparently Rafa has confirmed that he must sell first before bringing Barry in - in otherowrds the Alonso sale was the deciding factor. Personally be happy if Alonso stays - but have a feeling this is not over yet !

I don't think it would be a disaster if Alonso stays as I think he is quality, but I think his confidence may well have taken a bit of a battering as it appears Rafa doesn't want him anymore and worse than that neither does anyone else!

I think although Barry does not particualry (sp?) bring much different it's sometimes good to shake things up a little, and if you are going to do that you have to bring someone in who you know will hit the ground running.  Barry will do that.

Barry is also a more offensive player tha Xabi, which may mean that we ditch the formation that Rafa has mainly used with 2 midfielders sitting deep covering the defence and just stick with Mascha in the holding areas with Gerrard and Barry performing similar roles further up the field but covering each other as well.

Lets be honest we are all just second guessing what Rafa has in mind...

I have always been under the impression that it was xabi who has wanted to leave due to home sickness and wanting a new challenge ?

and i think if xabi is let of the leash a bit he would be far more offensive than barry as shown when he plays for spain and in his first season with us .

We will still sign Barry.

Rafa would of ruled it out otherwise. He knows who he wants.

Not at all Alonso has come out on numerous occasions and said he wants to stay at Liverpool.

This is a decision being driven by Rafa.

oh right - i know lately xabi has said as such but before that it was always believed he wanted to leave and rafa persuaded him last year to stay ?

even if he goes would rather a younger guy brought in and not bloody barry .

we've had 4 bids turned down, what more can he do? the saga is over unless they accept what we offered, if we were going to bid higher we wouldve done so already imo, unless alonso leaves which  I dont see happening now.

Rafa still wants barry , here's a newspaper article proving that and he also has to sell to buy again .

Liverpool FC still want Gareth Barry

Jul 29 2008

Rafael Benitez has confirmed he must sell again to bring Gareth Barry to Liverpool after completing the £20.3million signing of Robbie Keane.

The Reds manager insists that is what he aims to do, but he has no intention of selling Spain international Alvaro Arbeloa.

Liverpool are believed to have had a £7million bid from Sevilla for the 25-year-old, but Benitez has made it clear the player is going nowhere, despite speculation defender Arbeloa wants to return to Spain for personal reasons.

Benitez maintains there is no truth in the assumption Arbeloa is eager to leave and the former Deportivo La Coruna player will be part of his plans in the coming season.

But there is no question that Benitez still wants to sign former Aston Villa skipper Barry, the subject of a summer-long saga which has frayed tempers at Villa Park and Anfield.

Benitez could sell Jermaine Pennant, Andriy Voronin or Steve Finnan, but it is still more likely that he will persuade Xabi Alonso to leave if he can get a £15million-plus bid for the Spanish midfielder.

After completing the Keane deal, Benitez talked in terms of one more major departure rather than a string of smaller deals, to finance an £18million move for Barry.

Benitez said: "We knew that we could only spend money by selling players and we have been doing this (for Keane).

"We are still trying to sign the players that we need, and if we need to sell someone now, okay, we will do so.

"If we can do it (the Barry deal) before the end of the transfer window, we will continue to try. We will always continue to improve our squad."

Edited and included just the barry part there was some on keane also

What must alonso be thinking.  Even if he stays he knows the manager wants to sell him to get someone else in.

feel sorry for the lad.  I'd rather see us sell some 3-4 dross players than lose one quality guy like Alonso
