Sabre correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any Spanish clubs have been sniffing round him, even though it seems quite clear Atletico are ready to cash in on him. These are the same clubs that were offering crazy money to take him a few years ago. These clubs will get to see a lot more of him than our scouts would, and if they're not interested that speaks volumes. I looked up stats on Torres, taking out penalties to give a true assessment of his scoring ability, this is what I came up with:
Season Games Minutes Goals Goals/Game Minutes/Goal
02/03 29 2360 10 0.34 236
03/04 35 2979 14 0.40 212
04/05 38 3394 15 0.39 226
05/06 36 3197 12 0.33 266
06/07 35 3003 10 0.28 300
This shows to me someone who had a good scoring record for the kid that he was, but never built on that potential and has actually got slightly worse over the last 4 seasons. When you compare this seasons stats to our own strikers you get:
Name Games Minutes Goals Goals/Game Minutes/Goal
Torres 35 3003 10 0.28 300
Kuyt 34 2581 12 0.35 215
Crouch 31 1506 9 0.29 167
Bellamy 27 1916 7 0.26 273
All three of our strikers have a better ratio than him this season, yet we're complaining that we don't score enough goals. Hardly seems that Torres is going to improve our goal threat.
I understand that goals per game can be deceiving, as it depends on the quality of your team mates. What isn't so deceiving is shots to goals ratio, which purely measures how often you score when given the chance, and takes into account some players having less opportunities than others. Unfortunately I couldn't find the stat for Premiership players, so I compared him to a few of the players we've been linked with, Samuel Eto'o, and the less favoured choices of Diego Forlan & Diego Milito
Name Goals Shots Goals per Shot
Torres 10 99 0.10
Eto'o 11 56 0.19
Forlan 18 100 0.18
Milito 18 68 0.26
As you can see all three of them far exceed Torres' record of actually finding the net. We need a goal machine to arrive this summer, someone who's going to put the ball in the net more often than not. Torres is not that man IMO.
