Darren bent - Good enough

Liverpool Football Club - The Rumour Mill

redtrader74 wrote:Since the end of the season there has been a rabid obsession about who is coming in, lots of posters getting heated up, on massive highs and massive lows after every unsubstantiated Rumour.

We have been linked with so many players, one minute we think we have 100m to spend (who has ever spent that in one summer? only chelski come close, reality check pls) the next we are apparently potless!

Listen to the actual quotes, what did Hicks say,  'we had a signing that the fans will be really excited about' He would be suitably embarressed should this turn out to be untrue, i doubt a man of his position would be so naieve.

Rafa had a strategic meeting with the owners after his 'outburst', he was happy and didn't resign.

Our 5 most important players have re-signed, surely a sign that the transfers in, and budget are at the very least promising.

The owners are promising us a fucking boss stadium, i guess that means they don't want it empty, so logically they must be delivering a decent budget.

We were told should Rafa want 'snoogy Doogy' (I'll Google him later!) that he'll be backed all the way.

It is only 9 days into the transfer window, and 2 weeks since the season has ended, the vast majority of players sold so far have been out of contract or the very young, the established players will take more than a few days, first to be allowed to speak to them by their current clubs, convince them to come  and agree terms.

These are the simple facts and logical inferences from what OUR people have so far said and done, now you can base your posts on the Club, owners, manager and players reactions or what some sports journos who have nothing to write about have to say in their unsourced unquoted articles.

This has nothing to do with the 'in Rafa we trust' brigade, more 'in LFC we trust', it is the club/owners who need to provide the funds for Rafa to spend. IMHO i doubt much more than £35m plus who we sell, and this would be largest transfer budget in our history.

I think the time for mass hysteria is when we don't get any top players, who knows we may get an Eto ( i doubt it) Or Bent (Pls NO), or some real information from the Club, until then the pessimism is unwarranted.

Great post, redtrader.

As a Liverpool fan if I want to know an insight about how are things at the moment in the Liverpool surroundings I have two options from where I sit, read posts of Liverpool fans, and read the press.

Both are read with interest because you seek information about the club you like.

But if I review the press as a source of information and current state of affairs, things like Rafa resigning, Alonso being an exchange coin for Eto'o, in which we had to pay 35 M for Eto'o and  Alonso, Ultimatums of players to play the final, Bellamy not having work relationship with Rafa, Countless stories in a golf club, and things like that have been part of the information delivered by this source.

So when I see an article about Forlan now I shrug. I've reviewed the Villarreal surroundings and forums, and nobody talks about Forlan leaving. They're talking about his recent fight with Senna in a training session and how they make peace. I guess tomorrow, some spanish journo will be happy to echo the english rumour and make a story. Then another press article will echo the Spanish story and add a couple of personal touches.

So personally, I preffer the info coming from a post like Redtrader's. That are the quotes coming from the club, and that are the facts.

Manchester has spent 55M. Is that a problem? If  they've signed somebody we wanted yes. If not, it's none of our business I think. Since I don't know if we wanted them, I shrug. I also don't care Chelsea having an unimpressive Pizarro neither. I just want Rafa being given what he has been promised and wait to the facts. Then judge. But that's my personal option, let everybody do whatever they want.

Just because you're as sensitive to consider "numpty" a highly offensive word.

It's a shame you have a personal vendetta against me Bamaga man, you like trying to stir the sh!t.

I'm going to resist the temptation to multi-quote because that's boring as well, but I'll try and make my point anyhow. Firstly, Bamaga whilst there may be something in what you say, saying it twice doesn't make it any the more more plausible  :D

Secondly, and as far as LFC2007 is concerned, it is entirely unnecessary for me to get involved in an overcomplicated argument here. You have proven over your brief time on here to be a man of considerable intelligence so there is no need to complicate matters. I think you need to do less of the jumping on people when you post, and try and employ a little more manners in your replies. If you believe that someone's source (if indeed there is one) is unreliable, then simply stating that you, personally don't believe it would suffice. You don't have to tell them they are an idiot, or talking sh!te or whatever. It's unnecessarily rude and when done as often as you are currently doing it, boring in the extreme.

You mentioned a thread in which Lando took on the World and I feel that to truly understand that one you have to have an appreciation of the history of the relationaships of the people involved. The things which got said there had been waiting to be said or some time, many boils were lanced, things got off peoples chests etc etc. Lando infact must be one of, if not THE most abusive poster on here but again he has a history of decency hidden beneath his abuse. Those who have been around here a while will remeber him being the first to personally visit Phil in his time of need, at the forefront of the fundraising activities etc etc. When you, like me know these things and he calls you a clueless gimp for daring to slag Alonso, it's kind of OK. That's just Lando and it's alright. When however someone comes on here relatively new to the forum and has spat after spat with people, you have to ask if it is all necessary.

Now I guess that you will pick this to pieces, pull bits of it out, ask for examples, talk about definitions and stuff and fair play to you. Come to that, maybe you'll just dismiss the whole concept of you getting your forum "personality" wrong as just being a total crock of sh!te which is unworthy of comment. Whcihever way you go is up to yourself of course, but FWIW (which I grant you is probably not that much) in my opinion you do appear to have a decent knowledge of the game, and have enough sense and wit to become a valued and treasured member of this place if you just soften down the tone of your posts and be a tad less pedantic. Continue as you are however and any sensible points you do have to make, will be lost in a sea of irrelavence.

I dont have a personal vendetta against you, I just find your posts even more irritating and boring than the speculation your rubbishing and shooting down at the moment.

Firstly, It only makes sense that I reply to what you have said in the interests of putting my point forward - for that you cannot call me pedantic.

The whole point of a forum is to express your opinion, to challenge views and to extract knowledge which helps you improve your own footballing knowledge.

It may appear to you that I jump on people, and it may appear that I am confrontational. In writing, in words it is not always possible to understand the tone of a post, words are not taken at face value in certain instances - people jump the gun, read between the lines, and assume. It's only normal for people to make assumptions to a certain degree but there are posts where it is not possible to know the tone in which it is being said.

Example:

"It proves all those numpties who thought Xabi was off to Barca were wrong"

Now, if you are not familiar with the word numpty then this could be taken the wrong way. I use the word numpty in the same way as Del Boy would call Rodney a "plonker". But words alone cannot always give the tone of a post, if you put a smiley face at the end of everything then this may help, the same way if you put an angry face at the end of a post. But my point is that the tone of a post is often taken the wrong way, and I will usually do my best to emphasise my point.

This is also the reason I believe Sabre gets a lot of stick from people, if he chooses one wrong word it can alter the tone of a post from being jokey to being arrogant. The intent of a post can be misconstrued.

I have never been on an internet forum before and it can be difficult to get your point across without someone else taking it the wrong way.

Example:

"So you reckon Bent would be a good signing?"

Since there is no emphasis in this sentence, it could be taken in an unintended way i.e. questioning how they could think Bent would be a good signing. Something I've learnt from the forum is that it is best to phrase things in a way that will not be seen as imposing, sometimes by using cap's. or smiley faces, or bold but I don't know how to do that yet.

As for calling someone's post sh!te.

It may be bad manners, and it may be unfair but I then go on to explain why I think it is sh!te. Ok, I could use the word "rubbish" instead, but I get accused of being pedantic and I've seen "feck" used a lot so I don't see how using sh!te is so much more offensive. But when you say I have been doing it often, I have used it once or twice I think - no more. I've seen plenty worse.

As for the Lando thread, I am new to forums full stop. I take things as they are and If I see a thread that is 10x more offensive and 10x more boring and pedantic than anything I've ever written then I'd expect that to be the minimum standard of acceptance for the rest of the forum.

He certainly may be a top bloke, and I've read a few things on the drummerphil tribute thread that show how compassionate he and others were, and it showed another side to him that I haven't seen - something I have the utmost respect for.

But the forum as a whole has to run along the same standard in the interests of newbies, each newbie cannot expect to come on to a torrent of abuse.

If you're saying because you know Lando more than I do he gets away with saying abusive things to other members that others would get reprimanded for then I disagree, the standard has to be the same for everyone.

Finally, it is only natural when someone responds to your post to respond back, when the finer details of the words used are relevant and it helps get my point across then I will say so. But the extent to which this particular thread has become a definition contest is miniscule when you compare it to other threads such as the Alonso one which escalated into a farce.

I am not the only one who challenges people's opinions, plenty of people do it on here and plenty end up getting heated. It was only a day or two ago that Sabre and Saint were at it, but they didn't get told to button it. Likewise, Bamaga man appears to be on a personal mission to pick up on everything I say. I don't expect a mod to pour over every thread but when I put this thread in the context of other threads I question how there is such an uproar.

I apologise for the length of this post, but please don't call this being pedantic - it is only natural to respond and make my point thoroughly.

Well I don't think that was a pedantic response, I think it was a reasonable one. I hope we can all now move on, and as I have absolutely no desire to get the last word on the subject I hope everybody to whom the original post referred (and you were by no means the only one LFC2007 ) will at the very least consider how they come accross when criticising anothers posts and I won't have to comment further.

Like I said, this time of year can be a good laugh if people don't take the whole thing too seriously and just go with the flow. Uncle Albert? The welsh Wizards Wonderful World of W*nk? A small Welshman seen entering Melwood? etc etc. I must confess I love it every year, the forum would be poorer without it. The thing is, just occasionally somebody gets one right (although I must confess the Welshman never has   :D ) and then we get the "I told you so's" for the next few weeks, until they predict something else which is absolute b0llocks and then their credibility is shot once again. Like I said before, wait till Ciggs says it and then you know it's true.

Dont do it after he has signed, that will just mean we have blew millions of english pounds on a player that will spend all of his time in the ground.
We made that mistake with Emile Heskey  :D
