Leroy Lita capped his first appearance for England's Under-21s with a fine headed goal, but it was not enough to stop a 2-1 loss to Holland at Pride Park.
The visitors bossed the first half and went into the break two up thanks to first half goals from Fulham's Collins John and Eldridge Rojer.
The Young Lions began the better of the sides with Dean Ashton trying an early left-footed effort, but the visitors were soon in their stride and creating real goal scoring opportunities.
John kept up his impressive scoring secured at Under-21 level after getting in between the central defenders to side foot Edson Braafheid's cross past the helpless Scott Carson.
James Milner came close with a volley just after the half hour mark after connecting with Carlton Cole's deep cross, but the angle was tight and the shot flew over the bar.
Cole almost netted seconds later after charging down Boy Waterman's goal kick, but the keeper recovered to scramble the ball away under pressure from the Aston Villa striker.
Holland doubled their advantage after 37 minutes when Rojer lost marker Liam Ridgewell in the box to head Stijn Schaars's free-kick home at the far post.
It was almost three before the interval, but Carson got down superbly to palm Nicky Hofs' stinging shot around his right hand side post for a corner.
England's manager Peter Taylor made a host of changes after the break, with Lee Camp replacing Carson after the interval.
The Derby keeper had to be on his toes straight away to deny Daniel de Ridder's low drive along before palming away John fierce shot.
England did set up a tense finale when lively substitute Lita headed home, however the home side were unable to find that all-important equaliser.
