Er, except that Ranieri actually bought Lampard and Cech.  ???

Plus Duff

And Mourinho never signed Cole, Ranieri did. Is that what you meant bob?

Bav, I was giving Niall the benefit of the doubt and assuming he meant Ashley Cole (who Jose did sign) and not Joe Cole (who he did not). :D

Oh yes I forgot about him.  :D

Maureen is a t!t though, no matter how awesome he is as a manager, in a man he is severely lacking, I just don't like the guy

babu wrote:Think this is my first or second post in this thread. I really think the issues with Jose are quite simple. Two main points.

Point One:
I don't care what club you are, if JM comes as your manager, you are virtually guaranteed to win trophies. FACT. Why?
Because he is a clever bugger. He will never join a club unless the conditions are right for him and he is in a position to dictate. Things like financial power, owner's support and his autonomy, salary, players, etc. If there's the right balance he will join.

Second Point:
If any or a combination of the above conditions change, he will walk. FACT. He's proven it. So it will a rare owner that will have JM long term, Imo.

So the only differentiating point is how he manages at these clubs. And so far noone can argue how successful he has been. But its hard to compare him across the board, as only a handful of managers has be able to dictate terms.

Regardless, I hate the b@stard.

should a top player join a rubbish club? top F1 drivers join the best teams, jockeys get the best horses etc.

He started off as a nobody, not a footballer (in fairness, i think benitez is the same) but success gets you better jobs.

I don't believe Shankly, Busby or Clough could take over clubs that aren't great today, and make them into great clubs.

Ah, that's not the point I was trying to make.

Any professional is entitled to go after the best possible job on offer. Its a rare person indeed that chooses on passion alone.

JM has choosen better than most, IMO. Combine that with the success he has had, I can't see how anyone can dispute.

The point I was trying to make, was whether you hate him or love him, its moot. He would never have joined LFC. The conditions were not right.

Your last sentence has some element of truth in it, IMO. The time pressures for instant success these days do not blend well with the long term philosophies of those managers named. However they clearly did the job in their own time and against their own peers, that to say they would not be successful now is a little harsh (not saying you meant that). Quality is quality.

once  the talents of shankly, busby, clough etc became evident, they'd leave the little clubs (as lfc, manure, derby and forest) were, and join the big clubs of the day, as the big clubs would buy all the players they developed anyway.

They'd be a success in any age, but you cannot build a great club today without buckets of cash.

I would read about the 3 managers you mentioned before pigeon-Holing them in this homage to someone who has no relevance to LFC...Shankly's move from Huddersfield to Liverpool in 1959 can hardly be regarded as similar to Mojo touting his wares around the top table of the European elite every few years...exhibit 1

Clough's move too Forest from Derby...hardly similar either

Thanks for the advice wiseguy but I have read all about the managers I refer to.

Perhaps if you read my post you would realise that I have said that times are completely different today which is why the great managers of today don't build great clubs the way great managers back then did.

Also - so what if Mourinho has no LFC link? it is a Mourinho thread! Clough isn't exactly a Liverpool icon.

I speculated about how great managers of the past would operate differently if they were around today, and your criticism is that I don't have FACTS to back it up?

I respectfully refrain from name calling other members and therefore expect the same in return...easy really isn't it

I think retard is an appalling thing to call someone and I would hope that members on this forum would think twice before using such language.

As for Mo......who cares !

So is all name calling banned or only name calling against the moderators, just so that we are all clear. Personally I think all name calling should be banned as it shows a lack of respect, there certainly should not be one rule for the moderators and another for everyone else and I hope that isn't the case here.
