It's an historical support that developed during the 70's when TV boomed, so you're wrong.

And it's not just anecdotal, from George Gillett himself:

"“Liverpool have 28 million registered fans around the world. They have the largest fanbase in the world of any football club. That by itself is pretty amazing."

There seems to be a load of members on this forum who are anti-Liverpool, if you don't like us fook off!

Any opportunity to blow the trumpet of these fancy foreign clubs and you're there, well go and support them.

You make a fair point lfc.

But without getting off topic the majority of people you meet while travelling, as you will know, will believe whatever you say.

Thing is though, and in response to your post, i'm not a hater, far from it, been going since '82 and have always held the name of the club above all else. But as you talk about the tv boom, then ask people in asia, and parts of africa to name one player and in my experience they will all name a brazilian, (kaka or ronhaldinho) first untill you mention the name of lfc, then they'll say gerrard, fowler, owen etc.  They know us, but loyalty of the 70's has gone due in part to your aforementioned tv boom.

We have come back to the fore since istanbul and thats a good thing, but worldwide, we have fallen behind over the the last few years of the tv revolution. which was the main crux of my statement about the americans changing it.

The reason we don't earn as much revenue as other top european clubs is because we don't CAPITALISE on our fanbase, we still need to grow it, but it is there for the taking.

I have friends in Bali, Australia,Brazil, Singapore, Canada.... and have been to plenty of countries where LFC is massive, it's not as simple as people believing what you say - it's people watching and supporting Liverpool in bars and homes in countries across the globe. There's a big difference between brand awareness and support, Real Madrid may have greater brand awareness since they have been more aggressive in their marketing in recent years - we have not - but our support would match theirs, if not it would surpass it.

Can't have that, a huge no. of people didn't have a TV set in the UK in the mid 70's, there was no way any significant persons in Africa, Asia were watching English football then. The boom in TV coverage has been from the 90's onwards, unfortunatly whilst the Sh!te have been winning and has meant they have eroded the lead we have had on them.

Our success in the 1970's and the corresponding growth in TV/sports broadcasting is one of the main reasons why our fanbase is so big today, do you really think we'd have a fanbase anywhere near comparable to the mancs based on our performance in the 1990's?

It was the 70's and early 80's and the growth of sports broadcasting to match that has made our fanbase so big. The mancs had their success in the 90's, the Sky tv boom of the 90's is the reason why they are so big, just like the 70's/80's is the reason we have a massive fanbase.

TV did grow massively in the 70's and early 80's, I don't know how you think it didn't.

my point was a reply to yours on Africa and Asia, the tv growth was tiny there at the time you mentioned, 70's. As i have said in a previous post, Europe wide, where you can say a comparable rate of growth to UK, is where i believe we would have the bigger level of support, due to our success in the late 70's to 80's, and this growth was also down to the success we had in Europe, travelling all over, not solely down to the TV.

As a kid i travelled to India, Malaysia and Singapore, from what i can remember they had one or two channels that were the Govt. channel, Fck all English tv, some American stuff and hardly anyone had a telly. Manure's position in rivalling our support has come imo over the last 10-15 years since the advent of sattelite tv, and the boom of tv in Africa and asia, which has coincided with their success.

Think we do earn as much in tv revenue, and your totally right lfc2007, the club has never exploited the oportunity to market the club. hence my point about the americans. I've sat in bars in far flung lands thinking its all about me, I'll be the only one that really understands what it means and then we score................... and 6 or 7  other blokes stand up shouting, screaming and crying over a goal!!! thats why we're massive. cos' where ever you go, they'll always be a liverpool fan, and i wouldn't change that for anything.

I agree with you redtrader, it was a combination of many things, not just TV, but it was one of the main factors why we have a massive fanbase today. Of course not in Africa, and parts of Asia but definitely in Europe, our success transpired across the globe in many forms, newspapers, radio etc... and so on.

I think we agree, Europe Us massive, maybe Biggest, Mid east we are huge, Far east, asia, i'd hazard a guess that we'd be behind Madrid, Milan and the sh!te??

Doesn't really matter though some on here think you need to be born in the shadow of Anfield to be a real RED.

I'm not saying that whatsoever, support from anywhere is welcome as long as people appreciate the club and recognise how special a club it is. It's when idiots IMO like aCe come on here and harp on about knowing our fanbase when in reality he supports Real Madrid. If you support Liverpool, you support Liverpool and you learn about the club, he's what I'd call a "championsho manager" fan.
