Ex-red fails drugs test - Xavier

The Premiership - General Discussion

Postby JC_81 » Mon Oct 17, 2005 5:55 pm

Breaking news on sky sports news at the moment, Boro confirm Xavier has failed a drugs test.  Anyone else heard anymore about this?

Will he get a 9 month ban like Rio I wonder, the FA have to be consistent here or there'll be a backlash from United about this.

Will be interesting to see whether it was a performance-enhancing drug he got caught taking.  Wouldn't want to see that sort of thing happen over here, the Dutch and Italian clubs have been investigated in the past for this.

Disappointing to see an ex-red involved in this, but I'll wait for the full story to come out before judging.

And the whole point was that they had to treat not showing up for the test as a failed test.  So if he'd taken it and failed it he still would have got 9 months

If he tested positive after a game in which he took part, surely the result must be turned around and Xanthi awarded the victory by default?

i'm not so sure, john. i think ferdinand got the harsh treatment so as to send the message that you don't f.uck with the FA and you don't think you can get away with any monkey business. it wasn't just a case of failing by default in my view, the FA.

its going to be very interesting to see what happens to old abel.

Maybe you're right andy mate, that's just the way I interpreted it at the time though.

I thought the whole reason United were so livid at the time was that they reckoned missing a test wasn't as bad as failing it, but the FA said that in their eyes it was in fact the same thing - a missed test is a failed test.

But yeah, wouldn't fancy being in big Abel's shoes right now.  He's 32, a lengthy ban now could in effect finish his career.  He can concentrate on the hairdressing full time now :)

Interesting point, can't see it though.

It's different if the club is pumping it's players full of nandrolone to improve their stamina etc, but you can't punish a whole team if it was just one player who took a banned substance unknown to the club.  We don't even know if it was a performing enhancing drug yet anyway.  If it was recreational then it certainly wouldn't have improved Xavier's performance
