Andy Carroll signs for West Ham

The Premiership - General Discussion

The problem wasnt Carroll last night like most people have said it was the :censored: technically inept dross around him. He held the ball up well which is what you want from a target man and caused afew problems for Braga (im convinced a 100% Carroll could of scored a hat-trick of headed goals last night). Hes also only playing at about 50% of his ability as hes still finding his feet after missing 3 months of football and already hes finding himself to be the focal point of the team like last night, its unfair on the lad. Not worried about us turning into a Wimbeldon as come the summer well buy better technical players then Carradona to assure this wont happen (surely). In the wrong team Carroll becomes a "plan everything" in the right team he could be devastatingly effective.

red till i die!! wrote:he did ok last night imo.better than anyone else in his position with the tactics we used.
we need wingers to compliment him.
a proper rm and lm is what we need in the summer, someone who will take a lad on lift the head and pick him out.

yes in that way he was best, he was just being let down by the payers around him.

They didnt forget they just took the easy way out and hoofed it. Better players will use all his attributes.

Carroll will come good - when the rest of the team learn to play with him.. and with Suarez around him too - he and suarez will be awesome for us !

I'm not worried about him, he is noticeably unfit and still needs a couple more weeks till he can get there.  Him and Suarez will start to gel before the season is over imo.  He's a quality player, a different kind but quality nonetheless.

I think Carroll's performances so far have been solid, considering he's come into a struggling side, had to adapt to a new city and new teammates, and hadn't played competitive football for over two months due to injury - lets get things into perspective!!

His hold up play and aerial dominance are impressive but we do need some decent wide players in to get the very best out of him.  Worth 35 million?? Who is?  But I think he'll be a very good player for us.  One of the most improved players in the country over the past 12 months, if not the most improved.

I remember in his last few matches here under Kenny's tutelage he was getting more like the player he once was since Kenny was a striker, I'm sure he knew how to get the best out of a striker. Unfortunately he's gone.

Time will tell whether Carrol will be a prolific scorer like Rushie, Fowler or another not so prolific average striker like Crouchie. But I can definitely say he's overrated at 35 million.

As someone told me just after we signed him - Carroll is the equivalent purchase of going into a small corner shop 1 minute before closing and paying £20-00 for a Pot Noodle because you were starving   :glare:

 good analogy.

Thats pretty much how i saw it... rushed last ditch purchase with the huge wad of cash we recieved. Recall seeing the SSN yellow ticker around 1pm on the last day of the window "newcastle reject Liverpool offer".. and thinking thank christ.

Having said that.. i immediately like what i see in both ties vs Braga. His touch looks solid.. and thats massive. To be able to trap the ball, hold it up...lay it off...with his size, physique, aerial ability.. we have a major player on our hands. And Suarez is the perfect foil to play off him.

You also have to factor in what a diabolical central midfield he had behind him against Braga..he was fed nothing. And he is a forward who needs service.

Quality midfield signings in the summer, decent service to Carroll.. then we will finally see what we have bought.

That's all I wanted to say...to finally see someone have the ball played to him and have it stick enough for him to get his head up and lay it off to red shirt was fantastic tbh. He looked well up for the game and didn't go missing at all, was chasing the whole game. Compared to N'gog the human football repellant and the sour faced spanish boy this was soft porn for me.

Compare that to his 15 min debut where he looked totally off the pace and in another world, I was worried then. The team needs to up their game to get the best out of him though.

Question for all of you, how often do you find yourself going, 'my god, just how big is this kid?' when you see him flumping across the pitch?   :D

To be honest I'm expecting to see his first real performance tomorrow, if he starts.

He knows what we are feeling right now and that we need this game.  He hates Sunderland and wants to prove his worth against, probably his least favorite team.  He will be full of desire to prove everything tomorrow and I can't wait to see what he can do.

was poor in the first half, but improved in the 2nd 45 mins should have scored , bar a great save from the Sunderland keeper.

Will improve as he gains match fitness tho.

it was a goal line clearance,

lively second half from Carroll, especially that he got more service in the 2nd half.

He wont do anything of note until we get some decent wingers in to provide some service.

I am a little concerned and fearful that people are expecting too much from this kid too soon.
I have absolute faith that he will come good, probably next season, but if people pressure him too much he might fold. I noticed the strain in him today and I hope his team mates stop launching it constantly and fans cut him some slack if he doesnt win every ball or score every game.
