Timing of Rafa's Juve link is appalling in Hillsborough anniversary week

By Mark Lawrenson

Published 22:28 16/04/10

Rafa Benitez has an appalling sense of timing and it may just be that the Liverpool fans will finally turn on the manager.

Just 24 hours after the 21st anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster is not the time for your agent to be quoted talking about meetings with Juventus.

Hillsborough is an open wound still on Merseyside. When the facts come out, all the outrageous and false accusations about Liverpool fans will be put to bed once and for all when it will be proved beyond all doubt what really happened.

With such a long struggle and such a big event for so many people, Rafa's current tussle is put into very stark perspective. The timing is shocking. It's ill judged and insensitive.

Let's be clear on this. Even at the Benfica game at Anfield, the Liverpool fans were chanting his name, getting right behind the manager and backing him all the way.

They are staunch until the end and yet that is why they deserve respect and for the manager to respect them and the history of the club.

Rafa will undoubtedly blame the agent. But it's hard to believe Rafa didn't know what was going on.

The club is a soap opera right now. Will a new owner come in and try to keep Rafa? We really don't know. Nor does Rafa and maybe that's why he's looking elsewhere.

But would you give him backing in the transfer market? His record is shocking. He has bought so many players and yet his revolving door transfer policy has hardly taken the club forward or improved the squad. There have been far too many duds.

It's time for Rafa to go. It's been six years and it's time for Liverpool to say: "Thanks very much and goodbye."

Lawro's a tw'at and talks out of his.. only someone like him could make such a link - totally disrespecting Rafa and his respect of this club.

He'll regret this!

I dont know what to think here..... Lawro is to my mind saying that he feels that the comments reportedly made by Rafas agent were out of order.

But having said that he should have kept his own big mouth shut.

So i am on the fence here... if the comments are accurate then they are out of order and can see the viewpoint, but Lawro should know that it is not his place to bring it up in the same week. He has made a mistake and not interpreted the mood of the fans as he should.

I'm not even sure what to say...Appaling words from one of our own...I know he's come out with some sh!te before but this is below the belt
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

A very desperate piece of journalism. If ever a cry for attention was put into words, this is it. Shameful.
Bill Shankly: “I was the best manager in Britain because I was never devious or cheated anyone. I’d break my wife’s legs if I played against her, but I’d never cheat her.”

Were the quotes actually given on that day or were they just reported on that day? Because papers sometimes chose times when to pick up or ignore a story... having said that Lawro still shouldn't be making these kinds of comments himself. This is a week where everyone connected with the club should be closer than ever, not spouting your agenda.

Regardless of the subject, it sickens me that what happened 21 years ago is used in  any form for politcal point scoring for any of today's issues
