Two reasons-
1) the eruption in Iceland was a fraction of the power of Mount St. Helens eruption back then. Far less quantities and concentrations.
2) recent test flights by BA and other European carriers have gone to prove the theory that materials (and specifically treatment processes of the metals used in engines) used are more resilient to the potential damage of volcanic ash and the like.
