The report that we was to be looking into on this night had been passed to me by a very reliable source, They had been contacted by a lorry driver from north England. The lorry driver told them that at the start of the year he had a run that meant that he had to stop over in his cab in Grays that night. He had pulled over in The Chase just off London Road in Grays.
As he was getting ready to go to sleep he looked out of his cab to see a ghost of a young lady (15 to 16 years of age) walking in front of his cab and disappearing in front of his eyes. Once he had returned home he felt that he needed to find out more about what he had seen so he contacted Thurrocks local paper to see in they had had any other reports of this kind
Belhus Manor
In hot summer of 1990 a teenager was cutting through the golf course at 11pm when he see a lady carrying a light, he reported that the lady seemed to be in a hurry but it was only once she got closer to him that he realised that the lady was wearing a old fashion dress and the light was in fact a lantern, the lady was now only about 10 foot away from him but vanished before she got any closer. What he reported next my seem even stranger, He was now very scared and started to run the rest of the way home but just as he started to run he felt two cold hands on his shoulders, they pulled him back so much that he fell to the floor, as he lay on the floor a blue cold mist passed over him and entered the ground just by his feet, but the teenager said that he now felt very calm and peaceful so much so that he thought that he might have died and now was in heaven.
After a few minuets he got to his feet and walked the rest of the way home to report what he had seen to his parents.
A horse and carriage are also reported to haunt the road leading to the old manor.
Hadleigh Castle
A Woman in white is said to haunt the ruins, A milkmaid from a local farm saw her one morning and was commanded to meet her at the Castle at midnight. However the milkmaid was too frightened to go. The next morning the White Lady met her unexpectedly and was annoyed that she had not appeared the previous night and she hit the girl so hard over the ear that her neck was almost dislocated, after this the girl was know as "Wry-neck-Sal".
In 1980 a young couple camped over night in the remains of the old tower. In the early hours of the morning they awoke to a bright light, at first they thought that it was teenager mucking about in the ruins with a torch, but soon the light faded until all that was left was a small blue orb. The orb moved over the top of their heads, they reported that all their hair was attracted to the orb.
When we look at the second report this can almost for sure be put down to a natural event. Lightning balls have often been reported coming into homes and burning holes in curtains.
I do not know what the weather was like the night the young couple slept there or what time of year but I am guessing that it was in the summer, as a ball of lightening is often reported in the summer.
In 1975 a local man was taking his dog for a late night walk, he had got to the middle of the ruins when the dog refused to move. It did not matter what the man said to the dog or how hard he pulled on its lead, the dog would not move. In the end the man picked his dog up and turned to walk back home, as he did so he saw what he reports to be a ghost of a small boy with blood and dirt on his face standing beside him.
In shock the man dropped his dog, the dog now ran back down the footpath and headed for home. The man stood amazed at the boy, he said he did not seem to know that he was standing next to him and was looking right past him to where the remains of the old kitchen are. The encounter only lasted for about 2 minutes before the boy faded away.
There is one thing that I do find strange about this report. The man later said that the boy was not dressed in old fashioned clothes, in fact he described the boy as wearing clothes from the late fifties or early sixties.
Could the man have seen a ghost of a boy that had met his end here only a few years before?
I cannot find any reports of any such murders or accidents to match that time
