Livermore - evans did a great job!

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Norwich number two Doug Livermore has hit out at the critics who continue to undermine the good work done by Roy Evans during his time as Liverpool manager.

Livermore today returns to Anfield for the first time since he and Evans left the club in November 1998 and he's got nothing but words of praise for the work of his former boss.

"It was unfortunate it didn't work out for Roy and I. We tried our best, but in the end we felt it was time to move on," says the ex-Reds midfielder who enjoyed a five-year spell as Evans' assistant.

"As far as I'm concerned, Roy did a fantastic job at Liverpool. Looking back, I don't think anyone can argue we played some great football under Roy.

"I'll never forget the two 4-3 games against Newcastle and neither will anyone who was there. It surprises me Roy's not a manager now, because he's top class.

"If you speak to any of the great players we had back then, everyone loved playing for him. He'll always be a great friend of mine and has been since we were schoolboys."

Together, Evans and Livermore oversaw the development of many fine Reds players and he'll come up against one of them this afternoon.

"I'll be particularly pleased to see Jamie Carragher again on Saturday. He's become a top class player," Livermore adds.

"It was Roy who first gave Carra his chance in the first team and the way he's taken it would make a lot of people very proud.

"When you look at the players in the side when Jamie made his debut - and we had some great lads like Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman - he's outlasted them all at Anfield.

"That's a credit to him. You could see then he was a great character as well as an outstanding player.

"I think it's always important for a club like Liverpool to have a few local lads in the side so I'm also pleased to see Steve Warnock involved too. He was only a young lad when I was there but we always liked him."

I'm not sure who the "critics" are that the article refers to, I havent come across any criticism but then I'm sure it exists somewhere as it does for everyone in the public eye.
