What bothers me with Rafa is his general dodgy dealings in the transfer market.

Last season we bought Robbie Keane, a hard working and talented goal scorer who proved he can work as an excellent second striker.

Ok, it didn’t start off well, but the lad hit some form and scored 2 or 3 goals in 2 games and he also started linking up with Torres on occasions...what does Rafa do? He drops him and then sells him for a huge loss 6 months later. Why didn’t it work? According to Rafa it was Gareth Barry’s fault, if we had signed him Keane would have been a success.

Now, we have another 20 million pound player and again he’s not in favour.

People can go on about the owners all they like, but Rafa has royally f**ked up in the transfer market with his two last big money signings. 40 million quid wasted...even Houllier didn’t do THAT badly with new players.

Unfortunately, you're right. And there in lies the long term problem for this club. With the exception of last season where this team got off to a rocket start and then came back down to reality with Rafa ball, his tactics don't seem suited if the end goal is to win the Prem.

He'll probably get this team back in the top four next season ( assuming we don't finish theret his year and he's still around next season). But will his philosophy of destroyer instead of creator football ever lead this team to a Prem title?

Ferguson, Wenger and Ancelotti will be rubbing their hands with glee if hes still here next season

Watching the Sunday supplement a couple of weeks ago, it was in fact Houllier players that won us the CL05 (add Alonso, Garcia), FACup06(Crouch, Reina) and etc.

It's astonishing what players we had are far better players we've got atm. We've sold Bellamy, Riise, Crouch. Back in my mind I would have kept Momo Sissoko instead of Lucas.

Too late, MH. Things were changed a few weeks ago. I mentioned in the Portsmouth thread that I expected Lucas and Kuyt to be played in this game, and that the set up would be defensive as it rightly should have been. Today the formation, tactics were spot on IMO. The manager didn't let us down. One player in particular did, however. Steven Gerrard just is not performing up to the standards he should be, and he should have been making us tick here and at least bossing the final 3rd of the pitch, or in and around it. If he fails to function, we then lack a penatrating edge, because that's his role in the side at the moment when he's playing where he's playing. He's the link between attack and defense, from the midfield to the striker. Torres wasn't getting service through the middle, so all of his chances came from wide areas. Imaging if Rafa had have picked Aquilani to play in Gerrard's role and left Steve on the bench? He should have, but the abuse he'd have gotten would be unreal even if it's the right decision currently. Personally, he could have dropped Lucas and played Aquilani behind Fernando, but again you'd be taking away Gerrard's goal threat, but seeing Gerrard isn't even threatening good performances these days, what does it matter? I'd have the middle like this:

Torres

You go through the 20 teams in the league.. there are very few he'd be first choice in. Wilshere onloan at Bolton is in a different stratosphere to lucas.

Having one of the weakest central midfielders in the division, in what is the most important position on the field where most of the action happens.. its no surprise hes been at the heart of 16 losses.

Some (a minority) have blinkered loyalty/support to anyone who represents us regardless of their lack of talent..., and by doing this this little band of merrymen are supporting failure.

I agree with Steve Nicol who basically said it has to change as we've spend loads but have a poor squad and somebody (he didn't say Benitez) has to be held accountable.

Benitez will destroy LFC if we give him the time and (yet more) money.

All the people putting pressure on the owners to give him a new contract a year ago should realise they are partly responsible.

Our future will not be decided by whether we finish 4th this season, it will be dependant on the outcome of the ownership. In a few weeks we will know if that Rhone group will be pumping money into the club. If the stadium gets built then more money will of course be made for better players in the intrim until the stadium is built.

As for Rafa yes his spending record for low/mid range players is next to dreadful and his man managment style is not popular to say the least but nothing is going to happen until the summer so let's all just be patient.
