In other words your dislike for Rafa has caused you to wish the team to fail (makes sense that :upside: ) , and you get upset when your support for the club is questioned.

If Maureen was our manager and we were in this competition you would be wishing we won then right? Just a thought, maybe Liverpool is not the team for you.

It is a good competion to win, and I am glad to watch more games. I cannot understand why so called supporters are not happy we won yeasterday.

exactly.

i almost wrote  a post like that, as i cannot for the life of me work out why seeing the reds put in a good performance and go through to the QF has embittered so many *supporters*

Hi,
Greetings from a Benfica supporter, Portugal.

Once we will play our Europe League match with Liverpool FC and the first round is in Portugal I would love to welcome some Liverpool fans in my place, despite it is in Lisbon.
I really like Liverpool FC and I think that it will be a nice game.
If someone needs a place to stay just add me on msn: marcje93@hotmail.com
I can host 2 or 3 people in my place.
I live in Beja, it is a bit far from Lisbon (176km), it is between faro and lisbon.
It's a pitty it is far from lisbon but if someone needs, you already know, contact me.
We have train's riding every day to lisbon. :p

For me, being in this tournament is a bit like the League Cup, you're not too bothered in the early rounds, you expect to get through, if you lose it's not the end of the world but once you hit the semi-final stage (or quarters in this case) it all gets a bit more meaningful. I was bricking it the last ten minutes yesterday, as much as I do when watching the lad sin any other tournament which is a sure sign i'm well into it! It's a good draw as far as i'm concerned, I want to play the best teams, I'd rather we played a big name like Benfica than some soft touch bunch of part-time Eastern Europeans! Besides, we've always struggled against them sides and the Anfield crowd is always up for it playing the bigger names.

I agree with LFc's points about the strength of the competition, I don't think it's much different now to back when we won it in 2001. I think the PERCEPTION (rather than the reality) of the competition has suffered since the introduction of the league stages and the Champions League 3rd placed sides. It certainly seems to have lowered the prestige of the trophy in most fans eyes which leads to many to claim it is easy(easier) to win which is well off the mark imho.

I thought this was the first season for this competition  ??? That one in 2001 was the UEFA Cup wasn't it and teams weren't parachuted into it out of the Champions League.

Mick,
The Champions League is supposed to be a different tournament/trophy from the old European Cup but that doesn't stop us singing 'we won it five times'. It's still the UEFA Cup as far as i'm concerned, no matter what they call it. Different format, different name but essentially the same tournament with a similar calibre of team.

Oh the agony mate, the agony

In fact in order to find empathy with the obvious hurt that our participation in this competition is causing some posters ,then I am embarrassed to admit I have been contemplating self flagellation maybe this will allow me to sympathise with the unbridled agony our fans are enduring

I cant believe someone would rather not win it in order to try and get rid of manager ?! That's not supporting the club . Red and RBG and LFC2007 posts are spot on , this is a great trophy to win and I for one hope we win it and really go for it . Teams like Valencia,Roma,Benfica,Juventus,Atletico  Madrid are not mickey mouse teams and it's insulting to label the competitionas such . I'm guessing that all that don't care and call it Disney Cup won't be watching the remaining games or cheering us on .

As usual any comment on here which is above the base level of "up the reds" causes people to get their knickers in a twist.

Just to recap. I think we should try and win the competition now we're in it, I think we've got an excellent chance of winning it. I do hope however that if we do win it, it isn't used as a blanket, a pot of masking fluid in an attempt to cover up the debacle that has been this season and many before it. If it was a straight choice of winning this and begining another five year plan with the manager, or not winning it and having a different manager in the Summer, I'd take the latter.

Now I know that the last paragraph maybe difficult to understand for some, but there it is anyway. To be lectured on the "it's all about winning trophies" angle though by some of the numpties on here is a first even I never thought I'd see  .

Anyway I'll write it again even though they won't read it. I hope we win it. Lucas's performance was interesting last night dontcha think? No? probably just me.

Houllier won the League cup which bought him another season and a new contract and cost us another wasted season and £6million to pay him and Thompson off.  (thankfully he had already made most of his big mistakes in the transfer market with the possible exception of Cisse £14million)

No doubt if Rafa won the Europa League it would in similar fashion buy him more time (If indeed his position is actually under threat?)

I personally want us to win it, I don't believe its as good or as prestigious as the old Uefa cup, but its MUCH better than NOTHING. The only problem I have with us winning it is........ it's a big trophy for small clubs, a small trophy for big clubs ..... and I believe Liverpool are a big club, yet some seem to have a problem understanding the difference.
