Lost to them home and away in CL L16 in 05/06................................

Mickey mouse cup, mickey mouse draw(s) Mancs get an easy ride to the final, we get as tough a draw as you could expect - but at least we might well not prolong the agony

Mate I know you don't like the competition, lets be honest no one is really thrilled to be in it but why feel the need to come in and remind everybody (everytime) that it's a 'mickey mouse' cup? It's like listening to Alan Green commentate on a bad game of football.

In terms of teams its the toughest draw... but in terms of schedule, with both the quarter and semi-final at Anfield in the 2nd leg decider, it was perfect.

In any case.. if we didnt play Atleti/Valencia in the semi (with home advantage 2nd leg), we'd be playing them in the final (in a neutral ground). Gonna meet them sometime.

If we play Aquilani beside Masch from now on, and both Torres/Gerrard stay fit.. we are red hot favourites.

How is this tougher than Bayern/Lyon again ?!

Not a bad draw given the fact we play both 2nd legs at home before the final...

Benfica are suspect defensively and so are Valencia/Atletico...

Ultimately, it all comes down to how the league shapes up in the latter stages... We could very well find ourselves in a position where winning this thing is the only way for us to be in Europe next season.. Personally i dont expect it to happen but you never know with the pressure building up and players expressing their frustration at how the season is panning out...

Benfica are not much worse than Munich, if at all.  And Valencia/Athletico are much better than those 2 French sides.  We shouldve hammered Lyon if we weren't playing so bad at the time, and the last minute goals didnt help at all.

Is anyone else amazed that the Manc's always seem to avoid the all English ties?  Compared to us, Arsenal and Chelsea. We have played Chelsea 10 times in Europe since Rafa took over, and Arsenal twice.  united have played Arsenal twice and Chelsea once.

hmmm.... that should be investigated my friends.

If Benfica are so much better than Bayern, why aren't they in the CL??

IMO Bayern are a far stronger team than Benfica and I actually don't think we'll have too much trouble getting past them. I'm more worried about facing Valencia or At Madrid in the semis to be honest.

Completely agree Scott, it's doing my head in! F'uck sake, we had one of our best performances of the season last night, a bit of tension and excitement for once. It's helped drag us back into some form and generate some positivity. I'm looking forward to these matches, potentially 5 crackers against good European teams.

I can't understand why peoples expectations are so high for Liverpool? Why should we be in the knockout stages of the CL every year? If investment continues as it has been recently we could be nowhere near Europe.

So, we plough our way through the sides left in the competition that are from the south of the continent. I dont know whether thats a good thing or a bad....

In truth, all 3 of those opponents have presented stiff tests (with little success) in the recent past when they have been in the Champions League. It wont be that much different here in the Europa League. At least, Rafa will have a reasonably comfortable job laying down a plan based on familiarity.

Liege also were a tough nut to crack...funny though how we hardly ever encounter a German side of late.  Bayer Leverkusen i think was the last in recent history?

Anyway - there won't be a Liverpool v Valencia final now. In light of that, i'll settle for Hamburg on their own turf.

1984 and AS Roma all over again?

:)

Any team with the likes of Torres, Gerrard, Masch, Reina in its line up should be challenging for the champions league. Sometimes people act like we are on the same level as Wigan, we aren't. We are a 200 million+ team that has been goign through a tough patch, not a team of happy shopper signings that is happy to sit in mid table obscurity.

no one is happy where out of the CL and of course given a choice thats where we would be right now, but we arnt so why keep going over old news, its now time to face up to being in the Europa and go for it, doesnt mean are standards have dropped because we want the team to go out and try and win the damn thing.

also considering there are only two possible trophies to win in europe each year i would hardly class it as mickey mouse.

well put..

Now someones going to say how good our best 11 is compared to everyone elses. Well it is, but how often do we get to put out our best eleven. Virtually never. Football is about the squad and ours is weak in many places. It's not just about our best players.

Also, regarding the Premiership in almost anyway you look at it we come in 3rd or 4th best or even less than that so I don't see why we should be guaranteed knockout stage CL football every year especially not with City, Spurs and Villa outspending us at the minute.

If we beat benfica then i really fancy our chances of winning this.

The likes of Torres/Aquilani/Lucas/mascherano/Babel have all hit great form recently and we are starting to play with confidence. Gerrard is also slowly starting to find some form. If we can beat the mancs then thats a huge bonus and we can end the season on an unexpected high maybe.

Some photo that Fauxy. Brilliant depth of focus with Gerrard, then Torres, then the crowd.
