If we have 6-7 first team players out and then we're in a very poor form, heads will drop. It is an injury crisis and considering how close we were last season the players will be disappointed to have lost the ground so much. In these scenarios, Gerrard has to share the responsbility of rallying the troops and steadying the boat. To be fair this is probably the first time under Rafa that team's morale is this low. So give Rafa the benefit of the doubt. Things are looking up again with the injuries and alot of our first teamers are returning including Aquilani. If we win today, it'll be a good start and we will be 10 points away from the leaders. How can any fan, manager or player throw in the towel if we're only 10 points behind with more than half a season to go?

See micks post in the sack the manager thread mate.
United have had bad injuries this season and have managed to negotiate their champions league group, sit just 3 points off the top of the league and are in the semi's of the Carling cup.

There comes a time when we cant just continually make excuses.
I find it hard that people can criticise Stevie Gerrard far easier than Rafa ? WTF ?

mate WHEN exactly did man u's injuries happen? I remember only reading about it this week. ie. within  a week. When did ours happen? and for how long? They have lost 4 we have lost 5. Who is to say that they will not drop more points? Who is to say that after 38 games we won't be closer to them? Judge after 38 games not before not even half way of the season.

Anyway I don't much care about comparing how they cope their injury crisis vs how we cope our injury crisis. All I'm interested is to see OUR team improve their form starting today. Tha mancs are only 8 points away from us. If we win today it'll be 5 points. This margin is not impossible to overtake...

Do me a favour mate, dont trying and make out that myself and other fans that are doubtful that Rafa can turn it around - dont want him to.
Because thats ridiculous. We all want to win games, we would all like to do it now and that means under Rafa.
I dont know exactly when uniteds injuries have happened, what i do know is that between Vidic and Ferdinand the two of them have been injured virtually all season.
Like you said though i suppose we shouldnt compare united to us, lets just look at ourselves.
We are in an awful league position - and that is DESPITE united and chelsea having dropped alot more points than last season.
That tells me we are even worse than you believe and are just fortunate that united chelsea and the others are also not as strong.

Where in my post did I ever imply that?  :D  ... anyway my point is judge after 38 games when even the "happy clappies" would be happy to judge rafa...

Gerrard out to avert Liverpool 'meltdown'

Steven Gerrard says he will do everything in his power to ensure Graeme Souness was wrong to predict a Liverpool 'meltdown'.

Liverpool have been knocked out of the Champions League and face strong competition to secure a top-four place this season, and former Reds boss Souness suggested this week that the club could be forced to sell the likes of Fernando Torres and enter a downward spiral as a result of their poor form on the pitch.

Rafael Benitez has already hit back at Souness and fellow panellist Jurgen Klinsmann for their comments about the club, but Gerrard feels his responsibility is simply to ensure Liverpool return to form on the field and book their place in Europe's premier competition for next season.

"Meltdown is for him to say," he said. "I can't predict that far ahead but, for me as captain, I've got to make sure that doesn't happen. We're up for the challenge - there's no time for hiding.

"We need to get out there, roll up our sleeves and get this football club back where it belongs - that's as far up the league as possible. We're the players that are responsible for where we are in the league so we need to get it right.

"We must play better. We need to get back into a top-four position as soon as possible. It is the number one priority now. At the start of the season, we had intentions of being in the title race, especially after finishing second last year.

"That was a big confidence boost. It gave us the belief we could fight all the way, but we've had a bad start. The idea now is to get people back fit, get back to full strength and start moving up the league. I'm confident we can do that if we get everyone back fit."

Liverpool face a potentially crucial match against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday and a victory would go along way to restoring belief at the club. Gerrard, though, feels every league game now has to be treated as vitally important to their campaign.

"Arsenal is a massive game, especially considering our league position," he said. "Every game now is massive - a cup final if you like. It would be nice if we could get Fernando [Torres] in from the start and get about Arsenal because I'm sure they fear us as much as we fear them.

"It's very difficult playing Arsenal because they are one of the best teams in Europe at passing the ball very quickly. We have to press them high up and try to force them into mistakes. If we stand off and let them play, they'll kill us."

Thank God our captain is not a doom and gloomer...  :D

Magus said earlier "thank God Gerrard isn't a doomer and gloomer". That's because he thinks if we let Arsenal pass the ball "they'll kill us" and he thinks we should press them hiugher up the pitch. He thinks we haven't been good enough and that "we must play better". He thinks the club belongs "as far up the league as possible" and he says that the players thought they could "fight all the way for the title" but that we've "had a bad start".

I could have written that. I have a strong feeling that once he's retired and writes the second installment of his book, we may discover that infact Gerrard was a doomer and gloomer all along. It may just be that like the rest of us, regardless of who is the manager he simply wants Liverpool to win lots of football matches.

Is he (Gerrard) a "real fan" though?

Looks like they are even struggling to find a caretaker now. Who can blame anyone for not wanting to get involved in this mess.
Time to batten down the hatches, tomorrow or the day after.

Get a bus at the Jolly Miller tomorrow morning, get on the top deck as it goes down Mellwood Drive and count the security on the gates.
Went past there today and the last time I saw this many guards it was goodbye Houllier.
