Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We are still believing that Liverpool Football Club are invunerable and that "it will all turn out OK in the end". It wont.
It's not just Raffa. I genuuinely believe that he's a honest man who really believes in his methods. That self belief is fast becoming his downfall as it is not working with the players HE has signed. These are his players and his methods and they are just not up to it.
It is not just the players. We've two of the greatest Red Shirt Fillers I've ever seen over the past 50 years. The others are not bad players but they either do not understand or just do not want to play in Raffa's gameplan. We keep signing journeymen who are here for the money. I don't blame them for doing that but it's not doing my team any favours. They are grateful for the wage packet but not for the honour of playing for Liverpool.
It is not just the directors/owners. They've not come to Anfield to destroy the club. It is business and it is in their interest to succeed. Sitting in the stands with a brand new scarf on doesn't make you a supporter. They are here to make money, first, second and last.
I believe that we are now reaping the fruit of those years in the 80s when opportunity knocked and was ignored by a club that was resting on its laurels.
Shanks and Paisley made everything seem easy but unfortunately others didn't realise how hard it was to make it appear like that. Me included, it just seemed unstoppable, The Red Bandwagon. One star would come to the end of his shelf life and the next one was ready and waiting to come in.

We are now a club that needs to make big money signings which we cannot afford. The team ethic has gone. No players seem to be coming up through the ranks already knowing their place and requirements in the side.
I know that bargains are not there anymore, there are no more Keegans or Clements waiting to be nicked from Scunthorpe.
I also believe that we are paying good money for players who are no better than some of our homegrown lads.
I went over to The Acadamy last week and you may as well have been in Spain. Where are the local lads going ? I was watching expensive imports there but down the road I could watch local lads with similar skills and a bloody sight more commitment playing good football for nothing.
The few times I've seen Torres around town I've seen a modest, well behaved lad who is a credit to the club. The same cannot be said for some of the over rated superstars (both Red & Blue) who swan around with an unjustified arrogance. Torres is a breath of fresh air at Anfield but he is by far, an exception. Shanks would have loved him. I'm struggling to think of another import who would pass this test (probably Kuyt, honest and hard working).
The club is in a BIG mess and it will not recover overnight. The shake-up that is coming had better be a good one or we will never recover.
This is The Last Chance Saloon.

I think this is an excellent post with great points.
Especially this one: "These are his players and his methods and they are just not up to it.
It is not just the players. We've two of the greatest Red Shirt Fillers I've ever seen over the past 50 years. The others are not bad players but they either do not understand or just do not want to play in Raffa's gameplan"
I believe this is our biggest problem. Rafa is so specific and if a player is not up to it the house of cards seems to collapse.

Well, I believe what some of us are trying to point out is that it's not about waking up or sleeping or pretending to sleep or pretending to be awake ... it's about the attitude we need to have when facing adversity...

Are we in dire straits right now? yes most definitely... can we get through this? of course! Do we have a very thin squad made worse by one of the worst injury crisis in recent times? Yes no one is disputing that. Can our fortunes turn? yes no reason not to. We have Torres, Gerrard, Benayoun, Riera and Aquilani fit again... things are looking up and the only way from here is up. We might most likely not win the league this season but is 12 points impossible to overturn with 23 games left? Not at all! As long as there is a glimmer of hope left, I'm not giving up! And so shouldn't Rafa and the team...

They may be waking up to a big feckin shock in about three months time, if we keep going the course we're on.

Well answer this Tonyeh, if we're going the way Leeds and Newcastle who's fault is that Tonyeh. Surely a bad manager alone could not bring down a club like LFC, or even Leeds and Newcastle. We survived Souness now didn't we? Most of the time, it's the management that plays an important role in the club going down. In case of Leeds it's the financial mis-management, in case of Newcastle it's chairman intruding in the team's affairs...

It's numerous reasons. "bad managment" doesn't JUST mean Benitez. The owners (and guys behind the scenes) have their part to play, in affecting the run of things. But, when people overlook Benitez's part in this in favor of re-directing it elsewhere, then they're just ignoring the obvious and sticking their heads in the sand.

Benitez buys the players, he coaches the team, he sets the lineup, he sets the tactics, he makes the decisions before and during the game that alter the run of the game...and it's all lacking. This is the team the Benitez built and it's failing.

To hell with Souness...to hell with the past. That's the problem with a lot of the fans on here. They're still living in 1980. That time is gone and Liverpool is a very different team nowadays and it's a team in crisis too. That crisis may get a lot worse if changes aren't made to remedy the problems.

Harking back to glory days, past bad times or even a CL win in 2005 is no good here. It just doesn't apply to now.

I don't think anyone is harking back the past the way you put it. However, how can anyone ignore history. History serves as a guidebook. History teaches you who you are and gives you your background and personality. Without history we will all be lost and God help us all. There is no world leader that does not know his/her history. So yeah you may say "to hell with the past" in reality you can't ignore it, the good times or the bad times...

If the horse does not drink, that means the horse is not thirsty...

Or maybe the horse just finds the water like the truth is unpalatable

If anyone thinks will not make the CL next year it is them that should wake up. We have a lot of games to go and I cannot believe we will not improve in the second half and some have chosen to throw in the towel whilst calling those with hope blind. We win tomorrow and we will be right back in it.

I have said all along that I think we will get top four, but should that be the height of our ambitions. Its time for change, and time some people realised that there are no honours won "achieving " top four, and we need to be winning the title not settling every season for second best.

A few years ago there was a post on this site from a supporter of one of G&Hs USA sides - can't remember what stupid game it was - but the gyst of the post was that G&H were quite happy to be a top 4 team, never winning but always close. Their financial survival depending on the sale of their best players. Anyone remember the post ? I'd love to reread it.
