Europa league - Here we come

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

As I said before, I don't give a rat's about the Europa League. And listening to Stevie G, there's absolutely no conviction in any of his comments before or after the Fiorentina game to suggest he gives a hoot about it either. And if your captain doesn't give a toss, why would the rest of the players ?
The manager doesn't convince me either. Purslow sugar-coating the potential revenue if we get to the final doesn't convince me either.
All in all, I don't think anybody at the club gives a rat's that we're in it....

Its still a good trophy to win and one we rightly were extremly proud of winning back in 2001 and every single fan would be extremly delighted and proud if we won it once again this season .

your right benny but i have to say mate there is a bit of a difference to 2001 in that liverpool at the time werent really going anywhere, our defence was one of the worst in europe until Gh fixed it, we hadnt won nothing for quite a while, Gh certainly put us back on the map.

and while i would be delighted to win it in 2010, it would only paper over the cracks of a possible abysmal season, this squad on paper is well better than GH's, but to be fair i'd rather win this than be runner up in CL final.

While it will never be as good as winning the CL it would still be an achievement to be proud off when you look at the teams in it presently - someof the biggest in europe . I bet people who say they couldnt give a monkeys about it would be loving the fact if we won it and be proud of the achievement - as saint has said we arein the business to win trophies and the europa league/uefa cup is still a prestigeous trophy to win .

Sorry, mate.
Read my post again - it obviously didn't sink in the first time.
Or would you like me to rephrase it in kindergarten speak for you ?

don't say too early mate..

it is fair enough if you don't care now.. but i honestly doubt you or any fan would not care to follow our games when we get in and beyond quarterfinals. for goodness sake, we would rejoice even if we progress in carling cup, wouldn't we?!

i can't speak for the rest.. but i would choose to win europa league over being a losing semifinalist (or even losing finalist) in UCL any day.

that said, it is NOT an easy competition to win... but we should and we would give it a real go.

you would like to think the players will give it a go but everything they do this season seems un motivated, very lacklustre, like they dont actually care, even though they keep coming out about they going to try harder etc.

I think we are getting ahead of ourselves, people seem to think we will just turn up and win the Europa League. There are still some very good teams in this competition and going by our results against second string UCL sides like Fiorintina and Lyon, played 4, Won 0. Drawn 1 and Lost 3, we cannot take anything for granted until our form improves. Personally I want us to concentrate on keeping our place in the top 4, thats got to be our priority.

What would you take, win this and finish 5th/6th or go out of Europe but finish in top 4. I know which one I would choose.

Adios Europa League.

totally agree boo, its imperative we finish 4th or higher because if we dont i can see us losing torres.

if it was a case of finishing in top 4 and win this or CL final runner up then i'll win this thanks.

Ok, I dont really understand this. There are 2 groups in the europa league. One with the best champions league teams, and with the group winners? Then whats the point being first in the group when you'll end up with the other group winners and with the best chapions league teams? But never mind that, we are in the group of the worst chapmions league teams so... Anyway in our group now are: Atlético Madrid, Everton, Rubin Kazan, Standard Liège, Villarreal and becouse there are still some unfinished games in the groups of europa league, we will still have to wait for few more days to know which other teams will be in our group. And one more thing, there are two groups right? Then how come this is a knockout stage when it's a group?Kind of complicated. And since there are two groups, im guessing that the teams from the two groups wont face eachother, so probably the winners of the groups will face each other in the final.I dont know so... I may be wrong.

Its not a group stage - the groups are for the seedings of the draw for the next stage of the knockout . we will be drawn against one of the seeded teams .

It's laughable that people talk about winning a trophy when we've lost 10 games this season already. Last year the semis of the UEFA Cup comprised THREE Champions League dropouts, even if we're one that still leaves potentially 1-3 others from Juventus, Wolfsburg, Marseille, Rubin Kazan and Standard Liege not to mention any decent sides who started out in the competition. Last time we dropped out of the Champions League I bet a lot of our fans thought it would be an easy trophy, we got knocked out by CELTIC.

So regardless whether winning the third/fourth/fifth (delete as applicable) most prestigious trophy we've been entered in is high among some people's priorities, we need to focus on the bread and butter which is the league and set up next season. No side has finished lower than third and won the Premiership the following season, if we win the Europa League it won't get us into the Champions League by any door and while we might get compensatory money from our games, it won't compensate the money we'll miss out on if we don't finish fourth (or higher)

Am I the only one on here who wants us to win the league and couldn't give a :censored: about poxy cups?!?! Sure Istanbul was a great night, but a little hollow given you don't have to be Champions (League) anymore to win it and we're now potentially facing more years between league titles than between European Cups at this rate.
